New York Times’ Reporting Blunder During IND Vs PAK Clash Proves Americans Need More Cricket Coaching

New Delhi: The International Cricket Council (ICC) may have been spending heavily to market the game of cricket in the United States with the ongoing T20 World Cup, but the Americans need more time to understand the sport. The remark comes after The New York Times – one of the oldest and most renowned publications globally – committed a blunder while reporting the score of the India vs Pakistan clash in the T20 World Cup 2024 that happened at the Nassau County International Cricket Stadium in New York.

In their report titled ‘India-Pakistan Cricket World Cup Match Brings 34,000 Fans to Long Island’, the publication put an excerpt/strap which read ‘Security was tight, but the mood was jubilant in the temporary stadium in Nassau County, where India won 119-113 in a highly anticipated nail-biter’.

A scoreline like 119-113 usually comes in any sport whose results are decided by points. It indicates the reporter doesn’t follow cricket much or is new to the sport just like many in America. For the unknown, India were all out for 119 after being asked to bat first, In reply, Pakistan could only manage just 113/7 in 20 overs. With the screenshot of the article going viral on social media, the publication realized the mistake and corrected the error, thus getting rid of the ‘119-113’ part.\

As far as the match is concerned, Indian bowlers, led by an outstanding Jasprit Bumrah, were collectively brilliant, firing their team to a thrilling six-run win over Pakistan in a low-scoring T20 World Cup clash on Sunday. Bumrah (3/14) and Hardik Pandya (2/24) gave nothing away while defending a paltry 120, and India restricted Pakistan to 113/7.

Earlier, pacers Naseem Shah and Mohammad Amir produced wonderful spells as Pakistan bowled out India to 119 after a couple of rain interruptions. Shah (3/21) and Amir (2/23) exploited a slightly two-paced pitch to apply break on India’s batters, except Rishabh Pant (42, 31b, 6×4), who played a few breathtaking shots.
