Pakistan arrests nearly two dozen members of outlawed Pakistani Taliban

Pakistan’s anti-terrorism police on Monday announced the arrest of nearly twenty individuals associated with the proscribed militant organisation, the Pakistani Taliban.

The group, also known as Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), has been responsible for numerous deadly attacks throughout the country.

The arrests, based on intelligence inputs, took place within the eastern Punjab province over the last fortnight, The Associated Press quoted a statement from the provincial Counterterrorism Department.

The TTP, while distinct from the Afghan Taliban, shares an alliance with them. The Afghan Taliban seized control of Afghanistan in August 2021 during the final stages of the withdrawal of US and NATO forces after two decades of conflict.

The statement also reported the arrest of Mohammad Arshad, an alleged chief commander of the banned Baluch Nationalist Army, predominantly active in the southwestern Baluchistan province.

Baluchistan has been a focal point for a subdued insurgency led by Baluch nationalists for over twenty years. Initially driven by a desire for a greater share of provincial resources, the movement later evolved into a bid for independence.

Notably, Baluchistan is also host to activities by the TTP and other domestic militant groups.
