Pakistan’s T20 World Cup 2024 Super 8 Qualification Scenarios: What Happens If Babar Azam & Co. Exit From Group Stage?

New Delhi: Pakistan have put themselves in a spot of bother in the ongoing T20 World Cup 2024 following their narrow six-run loss against India on Sunday. With two losses from two games, Pakistan are yet to open their account and languish at the fourth position in Group A table. Earlier, Pakistan started their campaign with a humiliating Super Over loss against co-hosts USA.

However, the Babar Azam-led side can still qualify for the Super 8 stage. The top two teams from each of the four groups will advance to the final eight which will be divided in two groups of four teams each. Pakistan are 2009 champions and two-time runners-up. If they fail to qualify for the Super 8, it will be the first time the Men in Green will take a group stage exit.

Meanwhile, Pakistan still do have a chance to advance to the next round despite the loss against India. As things stand, both India and USA are occupying the top two spots in the group with four points each from two games. Rohit Sharma’s men are ahead because of their higher net run rate.

With India left to face USA and Canada in their remaining two games, the Men in Blue are expected to enter Super 8 undefeated. In that case, Pakistan need to win both their For Pakistan to qualify for the Super 8, they need to win both their remaining games against Ireland (June 16) and Canada (June 11) by bigger margins to bolster their net run rate (NRR) and also need a favour from India.

Pakistan’s Qualification Scenarios for Super 8

June 11 – Canada vs Pakistan: Babar Azam’s men need win big against the Canadians in New York.

June 12 – USA vs India: Pakistan would be needing a big favour from their neighbours as a massive victory by the Indians would dent USA’s NRR.

June 14 – USA vs Ireland: The Irishmen need to beat USA in order lend a favour to Pakistan.

June 15 – Canada vs India: Once again, Pakistan would be hoping for an Indian sweep over the Canadians in Florida.

June 16 – Ireland vs Pakistan: If both India and USA play to Pakistan’s expectations in the above fixtures, then the Men in Green will definitely have to beat Ireland in a convincing manner.

In case Pakistan exit from the group stage in the ongoing edition, the Men in Green will have to have to compete in the Qualifier to make the final tournament in 2026 which will be jointly hosted by India and Sri Lanka. According to tournament rules, the top eight teams in 2024 edition will directly qualify for the 2026 edition. If at all, the host nations for 2026 edition finish in the top eight of the previous season, then the T20I rankings will come into play (other than the ones who have already qualified).
