Rishi Sunak reacts to allegations a Tory MP committed 'series of rapes'

Rishi Sunak on Monday reacted to allegations made about a Tory MP’s committing a series of rapes, describing them as “very serious”.

While answering questions about the allegations during a visit to Norfolk, the prime minister encouraged anyone who had proof of criminal activity to contact the police.

“These are very serious, anonymous allegations,” he stated.

“They might make reference to something that is currently the focus of an ongoing police investigation, so I hope you understand that it wouldn’t be appropriate for me to comment further on that in detail,” he said.

“More broadly the Conservative Party has robust independent complaint procedures in place, but I would say to anybody who has information or evidence about any criminal acts to of course talk to police, that’s the right course of action.”

Speaking in response to a report in the Mail On Sunday, Sunak mentioned that former Tory chairman Sir Jake Berry had written to the police revealing that several accusations against an MP had been brought to the party’s attention, but not much had been done about them.

It was only after he found out the party had funded treatment at a private hospital for one of the accused victims that Sir Jake became aware of the allegations.

In a letter he co-wrote with another MP, former chief whip Wendy Morton, and a Downing Street official, he also asserted that the central figure in the scandal had been able to continue committing crimes because other party members had not taken action.
