Rohit Sharma Wakes Up With T20 World Cup Trophy, Wishes ‘Morning Everybody’

New Delhi: Rohit Sharma woke up with the T20 World Cup 2024 trophy on his bedside the next morning after winning the marquee event on Saturday. Under the leadership of Rohit, India defeated South Africa by seven wickets to clinch their second T20 World Cup title. He also became the second Indian captain after MS Dhoni to win the T20 World Cup. Sharing a photo on his Instagram story, Rohit clicked a selfie of him with the trophy kept on the bedside table and wished ‘Morning everybody.”

Meanwhile, the 37-year-old retired from the format after winning the trophy, following the same route taken by teammate Virat Kohli just minutes ago. Rohit was filled with gratitude to win the trophy and felt that he was meant to finish with a World Cup title as he had started his career by winning the T20 World Cup, back in 2007.

Rohit shared the photo of him waking up in his bed beside the T20 World Cup trophy on his Instagram channel.

“That was my last game as well. Honestly, I have enjoyed it since the time I started playing this format. There is no better time to say goodbye to this format. I have loved every moment of it. I started my India career playing this format. This is what I wanted to do. win the Cup and say (goodbye),” Rohit said even as the reporters in Barbados urged him to carry on playing the format. However, he Sharma delighted fans by confirming his commitment to continue playing ODIs and Tests, clarifying that only his T20 international career has come to an end.

Both Kohli and Rohit capped their illustrious careers on a high, clinching a World Cup crown for India together for the first time. Kohli earned the Player of the Match award for his spectacular 76 off 59 balls, propelling India to a total of 176/7 after winning the toss. In reply, South Africa managed 168/8 in 20 overs.

Notably, under Rohit, India were playing their third ICC final in less than one year. Last year, India had lost in the finals of ODI World Cup and World Test Championship, both against Australia. Rohit finished his T20I career as the all-time highest run-getter with 4231 runs, including five hundreds, the most by a batter in T20I cricket. He also has 32 fifties to his name.

He also played an instrumental role in transforming India’s mindset in T20I cricket, banishing the fear of failure. Leading from the front in the T20 World Cup 2024, Rohit was a force to be reckoned with, dominating powerplays and striking fear into the hearts of the opposition. He amassed 257 runs in eight matches, boasting an impressive strike rate of 156.70.
