Rs 25 crore jewellery heist in Delhi: Burglars bore hole in shop’s wall, rob gold, diamond ornaments

Gold and diamond jewellery worth around Rs 25 crore were stolen from a store in south-east Delhi by burglars who entered from the terrace and bore a hole in the shop’s wall to access it before dusting it completely.

According to the Delhi Police, the heist in jewellery shop in the Bhogal area of Jangpura took place on the intervening night of 25 and 26 September.

The shop was closed on Monday and its owner learned about the robbery only on Tuesday morning when he came to open it.

“We closed the shop on Sunday and when we opened it on Tuesday after an off on Monday, we saw that there was dust in the whole shop and there was a hole in the wall of the strong room,” Sanjeev Jain, owner of the jewellery shop which was looted, said.

“We think they (thieves) have looted everything. There was jewellery worth around Rs 20-25 crores. They entered from the terrace. Everything is damaged including CCTV,” Jain added.

According to police, the thieves stole away all the gold and diamond ornaments and just left behind those made of silver.

“It is a big incident of burglary. Investigation underway, CCTV footage accessed,” Rajesh Deo, DCP South-East, said.

“We have called the forensic team… We will get to know how much stock has been stolen only after opening the safe,” Deo added.

A case has been registered into the incident.

Reports quoted police sources saying the burglary appeared to be planned and the culprits had prior information about the shop as well as where jewellery was kept. They even had knowledge of how to reach the strong room.
