Shaami Kapoor proposed Neila Devi right after a 5-hour phone call

Shammi Kapoor is a name familiar to all of us. The Bollywood legend followed in his father Prithviraj Kapoor’s footsteps and carved his own niche in the industry. In his personal life, the actor experienced a profound loss when he lost his first wife Geeta Bali. Following this, Shaami Kapoor entered into several relationships before finding love again in Neila Devi. In a recent conversation with ETimes, Neila Devi revealed an intriguing aspect of their love story. It was Shammi Kapoor’s sister-in-law and Raj Kapoor’s wife Krishna Kapoor who suggested her as a potential match. Shedding light on their unique courtship, she recalled a late-night phone call from Shammi Kapoor that turned into a five-hour conversation.

Shaami Kapoor-Neila Devi’s unique courtship

As per the reports, during their conversation, Shaami Kapoor discussed his romantic history with Neila Devi. By the end of that call, Shammi Kapoor spontaneously proposed to Neila Devi. The next day they got married at Shammi Kapoor’s Mumbai residence in the presence of close family and friends. Neila Devi also shared that following their phone call, Shammi Kapoor promptly informed all his other girlfriends about his decision to marry.

Reportedly, after the wedding, Shammi Kapoor went to Shimla to shoot Prince (1969). Neila Devi did not come with him as Shammi Kapoor was conscious of being seen with her in public. She was quoted saying, “People might not believe it, but he was very shy,”

Neila Devi said that despite being a heavy drinker and smoker, Shammi Kapoor would stay away from alcohol for 21 days every year, from January 1 to January 21, to honour the memory of his first wife. Geeta Bali fell ill on January 1 and passed away on January 21.

Shammi Kapoor underwent lung surgery back in 2003, and a few years later the actor suffered from kidney failure. He passed away on August 14, 2011, at the age of 79.
