Siddharth Anand calls Fighter's comparison to Top Gun 'social media chatter': 'Anything you do is compared cheap copy...

Hrithik Roshan and Deepika Padukone starrer Fighter recently hit theatres and has gained a lot of attention from audiences. The aerial action film, which shows the actors taking on the role of Indian Air Force officers, serves as a tribute to the sacrifice of the IAF officers. However, as soon as the trailer was dropped, fans were seen drawing parallels between Fighter and Tom Cruise’s Top Gun films, highlighting several similarities between the two movies.

Days after repetitive comparisons between Fighter and the Hollywood film, director Siddharth Anand recently broke his silence on the same, calling it nothing but “social media chatter” which only gains a lot of negativity.

In a conversation with Gallata Plus, Siddharth Anand shared his thoughts about his film being compared to Top Gun and said that they have blatantly taken inspiration from films.

“Nowadays anything you do now is compared as a cheap copy of Hollywood films. Yes, we have had instances of taking inspiration from films. We as an audience have lost respect for films, which I feel is very sad. Because Fighter is about fighter jets, the instant analogy is that it’s Top Gun. I think eventually when you saw the trailer, you realised that there is nothing to do with Top Gun.”

He further went on to add that the only reference point is Top Gun and continued, “So they’ll say ‘Oh they have copy Top Gun. It’s all social media chatter, which is really out there to put your work down and bring negativity which gets a lot of traction.”

‘We need to watch our films with more respect’

This is not the first time that the director, who also has films like War and Pathaan to his credit has spoken about the comparisons with Top Gun films.

Earlier, after the film’s trailer was released, Siddharth, in a conversation with Zoom, said, “It is inevitable. As a filmmaker, one has to be prepared that if films are made on airplanes, they will be compared to Top Gun because people have no reference point. We need to start looking at our films with more respect and not constantly believe that we are not creative. People do get inspired, even in the West, by content that is created in the East.”
