South Korean farmers protest against proposed ban on dog meat industry

Around 200 South Korean farmers engaged in breeding and raising dogs for human consumption gathered for a protest near Seoul’s presidential office Thursday. Their demand: a plea to the government to abandon plans for a ban on this centuries-old practice.

Despite efforts by dozens of farmers attempting to drive trucks carrying dogs in cages to the presidential office, they were thwarted by police inspections of the cargo, which was concealed under blankets.

President Yoon Suk-yeol’s ruling party has introduced a bill proposing the prohibition of dog breeding and sale for consumption. The bill also includes a three-year grace period, during which financial compensation would be provided to those in the industry compelled to shut down their businesses.

Party members emphasize the need to put an end to the controversy surrounding dog meat consumption, citing broad support from the opposition party and the public, along with the fact that more than 6 million South Korean households now own dogs as pets.

A Gallup Korea poll from the previous year revealed that nearly two-thirds of respondents opposed eating dog meat, marking a decline from 27% in 2015 to 8% in the past year.

Ju Yeong-bong, representing the industry group leading the rally, argued that politicians should not have the authority to shut down an entire industry or dictate people’s dietary choices. He contended that the proposed financial compensation was insufficient given the potential loss of livelihoods.

The farmers, feeling excluded from discussions on the bill, engaged in scuffles with outnumbering police forces and faced detainment. While the consumption of dog meat has waned in popularity, farmers and restaurant owners are fiercely opposing any move to make it illegal.

Accusations have been leveled against first lady Kim, a vocal critic of dog meat consumption, for allegedly exerting undue pressure on the government and the ruling party to endorse the ban. The presidential office, in response, noted widespread support for the ban both domestically and internationally, including backing from the opposition party.
