Speaker McCarthy Has Blunt Take on the DeSantis Feud With Disney

The Republican offers a quick comment on the controversy.

Speaker of the House Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., weighed in on an ongoing controversy April 27.

He made his opinion clear about the quarrel between Disney  (DIS) - Get Free Report and Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, R-Fla.

"I think the governor should sit down with them," he said on CNBC April 27. "I don’t think building a prison next to a place where you bring your families is the best idea."

"I think it would be much better if they sat down and solved the problems," he added. Twitter user @atrupar posted the video.

DeSantis had floated the idea of building a prison near the Disney World theme park in Orlando on April 17.

"On the same point," McCarthy said, "If you are going to be an employer inside this state, you should also abide by the rules and run your business and I don’t think you should get into politics."

Now, the conflict is headed to court. Disney sued DeSantis on April 26.

Disney's lawsuit asserts that DeSantis' move to take political control of the Reedy Creek Improvement District, Disney World's location, is "patently retaliatory, patently anti-business, and patently unconstitutional."

The Central Florida Tourism Oversight District's board of supervisors voted on April 26 to nullify a set of agreements Disney made with Reedy Creek earlier this year that would let the company keep control of the board that governs the special business district, according to WESH 2 News in Orlando. 

"Disney picked the fight with this board. We were not looking out for a fight. We had agreed to meet with the leadership of Disney to figure out how we could work together," said Martin Garcia, chair of the Central Florida Tourism Oversight District board of supervisors, according to the story.
