US: Dentist sued for giving woman 8 crowns, 4 root canals, and 20 fillings in single visit

A practicing dentist in Minneapolis was sued by one of her patient for allegedly performing an extensive dental intervention, including eight crowns, four root canals, and 20 fillings, leading to significant injuries during a single visit in July, 2020.

The complainant Kathleen Wilson, a Minneapolis resident, initiated legal proceedings against Dr. Kevin Molldrem of Molldrem Family Dentistry, filing a malpractice lawsuit in Hennepin County District Court.

The lawsuit contends that Dr. Molldrem surpassed safe anesthesia levels and falsified medical records to conceal the excessive dosage. A Florida dentist, providing an expert opinion, deemed such an extensive dental procedure in a single session as “impossible to achieve if done properly.”

Dr. Molldrem’s is yet to issue any reaction on the allegations. A summons was personally served to him at his office on December 20, and Wilson’s attorney, Nathaniel Weimer of Tewksbury & Kerfeld, has not provided any comments either.

Dr. Molldrem, whose website emphasizes family-oriented dental care, faces accusations of negligence resulting in Wilson requiring additional medical attention to address the aftermath of the procedures. Wilson’s claims extend beyond medical costs, citing pain, embarrassment, disfigurement, and distress. She is seeking a minimum of $50,000 in damages.

Dr. Avrum Goldstein from Naples, Florida, reviewed Wilson’s medical records, identifying breaches in the duty of care. While acknowledging Molldrem’s correct diagnosis, Goldstein criticized the quality of treatment, emphasizing the impossibility of addressing decay in virtually every tooth in a single visit.

Goldstein emphasized that Wilson needed a gradual and thoughtful response to her dental issues. He stated that attempting to address all the problems in a single session was not only counterproductive but also humanly impossible. One specific concern highlighted was the excessive anesthesia administered, with Molldrem surpassing the recommended dosage by administering 960 mg instead of the maximum 490 mg.

Wilson’s records indicate discrepancies in the reported anesthesia administration, with Goldstein revealing a significant variance between Molldrem’s documentation and the actual doses administered.
