Was Sanjay Leela Bhansali scared to work with Resul Pookutty in Black?

Sometimes being too good at what you do can also end up limiting your opportunities. That’s exactly what happened to Oscar Award-winning sound designer Resul Pookutty when film directors chose not to work with him because he was too good and knowledgeable at what he does.

During an interview with Film Companion, Resul Pookutty revealed that ever since he won an Oscar, he has had almost zero opportunities in Bollywood. He also reminisces about an incident when a well-known film producer ghosted him after discussing his film at length for several hours.

Resul Pookutty rejected for being good at work

While speaking to the entertainment news portal, Resul shared, “I went to his office for hours of narration. I had my ideas, and I was told, Let’s start the film in July. They started filming, but they never came back to me. So, I wrote to them. It is okay that you don’t want me, but be professional and let me know. But I wanted to know one thing. What do I lack as a person at this point in my career so that I can correct myself?”

To which, Resul got a reply after the film became a huge hit. The director said that he has been trying to answer his question for the last two years. Maybe he is from a village, and this could be the village-boy syndrome. When he spoke to Resul about the film, the latter was so clear with his ideas.

The director added, “You had so much knowledge about what you do that it scared me. You knew so much about cinema. It should have been a reassurance for me, but it scared me.”

Likewise, Resul also recalled the time when ace filmmaker Sanjay Leela Bhansali told him that he was scared while working with him on Amitabh Bachchan’s 2005 film Black. “I did enormous work in Black. Even today, when people look at it, they tell me that it’s a phenomenal work in sound.

After two months of the film’s release, Bhansali called me to wish me a happy Eid and told me, You know, Resul, in my entire film career, you are the only technician that I was scared of. During the film’s making, I realised every time that you were taking the film away from me. First, I was shocked. Then I realised that’s the biggest compliment,” he said. Black also featured Rani Mukerji in an important role.
