Why Super Bowl LVIII Is Going to Look Different From Past Years

For the first time in the history of the NFL, there will be a simultaneous English broadcast of the Super Bowl on another network.

CBS will air the traditional version of the Super Bowl LVIII on February 11, 2024, while a second version of the game will air on Nickelodeon, CBS Sports and the NFL announced on Tuesday, August 1.

The Nickelodeon broadcasts are meant to appeal to a younger audience, with gimmicks surrounding popular characters like Spongebob Squarepants, who appears between the uprights during field goal kicks. There are also AR slime cannons that spew virtual slime to celebrate every touchdown.

While this is the first time the Super Bowl will air on the kid-friendly network, this is not the first time the NFL has gone with a slimier edition of its broadcasts. Nickelodeon first broadcast the January 10, 2021 Wild Card game between the Chicago Bears and New Orleans Saints. It drew 2.06 million viewers on Nickelodeon, adding to 30.65 million viewers between the two networks.

There have been two other iterations of NFL on Nickelodeon, including the blowout Christmas match-up between the Los Angeles Rams and Denver Broncos in 2022, and the Wild Card playoff game between the San Francisco 49ers and Dallas Cowboys on January 16, 2022. The latter drew the largest total audience for an NFL Wild Card game in seven years at 41.49 million viewers.

Aside from Super Bowl LVIII, Nickelodeon will also air another Christmas Day game for the upcoming season: the ‘NFL Nickmas Game’ between the Las Vegas Raiders and Kansas City Chiefs.
