Ahead of Vicky Kaushal's 'Sam Bahadur', know why Indira Gandhi suspected Sam Manekshaw of planning a military coup

Meghna Gulzar’s next film is Sam Bahadur. It chronicles the fearless life of field marshal Sam Manekshaw and his contribution to the nation and its army from India’s independence in 1947 to Bangladesh’s liberation in 1971. He was a no-nonsense personality who never minced words. His aura and demeanor brimmed with confidence and assurance. And if you have seen the trailer, it also throws light on his complex relationship with former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, played by Fatima Sana Shaikh.

When Manekshaw was suspected of military coup

The revelation was made by Manekshaw himself in an interview back in 2002 when he was being interviewed by his own grandson for the documentary In War And Peace- The Life Of Field Marshal Sam Manekshaw. The documentary was released by the Parzor Foundation.

He recalled how Gandhi called him at her office and said how he was her problem. “Everyone says you’re going to take over me,” were her words to the field marshal. Manekshaw said in the interview he had no intention to take over as long as he had command over his army without any interference.

It will be interesting to see if this chapter of his life makes it to the film or not.

About the film

At the trailer launch of the film, Vicky Kaushal said he didn’t feel he was good looking enough to essay this character. “I remember when Meghna and I were working on Raazi, then during a shooting schedule in Patiala she told me what she wanted to do next. And she said she wants to make a film on Sam Manekshaw,” Kaushal said.

The trailer was launched in presence of Army Chief General Manoj Pande. Kaushal’s co-actors Sanya Malhotra, Fatima Sana Shaikh, director Gulzar and producer Ronnie Screwvala also attended the event.

Sam Bahadur will span Manekshaw’s career of over 40 years, including significant milestones, from fighting in World War II to being the Chief of Army Staff during the 1971 Indo-Pakistan war, that led to the creation of Bangladesh, according to the makers.
