As Modi To Take Oath As PM Today; Will Rahul Be Leader Of Opposition, Here’s What Sonia Gandhi Said

Who Will Be Leader of the Opposition: The BJP-led NDA alliance won the Lok Sabha elections by a thumping majority, and now, after being elected as the leader of the Lok Sabha and NDA parliamentary party, Narendra Modi is all set to take oath as the Prime Minister of India for the third consecutive time today. However, while the saffron party has won the general election battle, people are also talking about Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s impressive performance, as he won the Wayanad and Raebareli constituencies and emerged as a mature leader. Now, all eyes are on the Leader of the Opposition post in the Lok Sabha. Sonia Gandhi, who was re-elected as the chairperson of the Congress Parliamentary Party on Friday, reacted to a question on whether Rahul Gandhi would take the LoP post, stating, ‘You should ask him

The Congress Working Committee passed a resolution stating that Rahul Gandhi – who won Rae Bareli and Wayanad seats with a margin of over 3.5 lakh votes –  should be appointed the Leader of the Opposition. It is worth noting that no opposition party had got the crucial post in 2014 and 2019 because they did not have 10 percent of the Lok Sabha’s strength which is  needed to be eligible for it.

After the Congress Working Committee (CWC) meeting, the party’s national general secretary KC Venugopal said “The CWC unanimously requested Rahul Gandhi ji to take the responsibility of the leader of the opposition in the Lok Sabha.”

In its resolution, the CWC stated, “Former Congress President Rahul Gandhi has to be singled out largely because of the Bharat Jodo Yatra and the Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra that he designed and led. Both these Yatras that reflected his thinking and personality were historic turning points in our nation’s politics and instilled hope and confidence in lakhs of our workers and crores of our voters. Rahul Gandhi’s election campaign was single-minded, sharp and pointed and more than any other individual it was he who made the protection of our republic’s Constitution the central issue in the 2024 elections.”

“The Paanch NYAY-Pachees Guarantee programme which resonated so very powerfully in the election campaign was the outcome of Rahulji’s yatras in which he listened to the fears, concerns and aspirations of all people, especially youth, women, farmers, workers, Dalits, Adivasis, OBCs and minorities,” the resolution added.

In the 2014 Indian general election under PM Narendra Modi, the Congress party clinched 44 Lok Sabha seats, which slightly increased to 52 in the following 2019 elections. Fast forward to the most recent election, and Congress triumphantly secured 99 seats. Yet, the larger election victory was clinched by the INDIA alliance, bagging a total of 232 seats.

This outcome left the BJP just shy of the threshold for majority, missing it by a mere 32 seats. Despite these swings, this Sunday anticipates Narendra Modi assuming the Prime Minister’s role for a third term, as the NDA managed to surpass the necessary total with a comfortable lead, settling at 293 seats.

A moment of celebration also came for Sonia Gandhi who took delight in the election of 13 female MPs to the Lok Sabha from Congress.
