EXCLUSIVE interview of Radhika Mehrotra and Vikas Kumar for Netflix's 'Kaala Paani' success

Kaala Paani that’s currently streaming on Netflix has been described and reviewed as one of the best web shows of the year so far for its unique storytelling and compelling performances. What also successfully sucked people into its original world was the gorgeousness of the Andaman and Nicobar islands, which never became a part of any content’s narrative in ages.

In an exclusive interview with Firstpost, two of its leads, Radhika Mehrotra and Vikas Kumar, spoke about preparing for their respective characters, shooting in the Andaman, and the takeaways from the world they inhabited in the show.

What are the responses you both have received for the show so far?

Radhika: Great responses, very overwhelming. A lot of love has been coming our way for the show and the characters and we are very grateful

Vikas: We knew we were working on something special, not only on the basis of the material but also the repute of the people and what they have done in the past. It’s very heartening because the terms people have been using are superlative, they are going all out with their praise for the show. They have been connecting with all the characters.

Radhika, talk about your prep for the show since the show’s concept and narrative are fresh.

The credit for this goes to our writer Biswapati Sarkar, the way he has written his characters is so layered and fleshed-out. For me personally, whatever details I needed were all on paper. I also must say he has written some really strong female characters for the show, and that’s very exciting. As an actor and an audience, it’s exciting to be a part of something like this.

How was your experience of shooting at Andaman and Nicobar?

Radhika: This was my first show and I’m grateful that I got to be a part of it. To base and shoot the entire show in the Andaman is a brave call, and we went there, it was absolutely mesmerizing and beautiful. I don’t think this is an experience I can describe in words about what we were feeling, but I truly feel everyone must go and visit that place once in his lifetime.

Vikas: It’s the most beautiful place in India, pristine. I hope other places could be as untouched and unpolluted as Andaman. This has an absolutely unique geography because you have water, absolutely clear water, sand, and then white sand, and then thick jungles within 50 meters. We encountered a lot of snakes while shooting and during our scene. We also saw crabs. With a show like this and the situation everyone was put in, Andaman was the ideal location. Cinematography wise, it looks so pretty in front of the camera, we have had a couple of shows shot here but not for as many days as we did.

Radhika, what is the one takeaway for you from the show and your character.

I literally feel I won a lottery when I was cast for the show. I’m very grateful this show happened to me, and for me, one of the most exciting things about the show is the way it has told the stories of these people. And I’m very excited and proud that I’m a part of Kaala Paani.
