Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar, a drama centres on the lives of tawaif, or courtesans, who resided in pre-independence Lahore in the Heera Mandi red-light area. With a superb star ensemble that includes Manisha Koirala, Sonakshi Sinha, Richa Chadha, Aditi Rao Hyadri, Taha Shah and Fardeen Khan among others, SLB’s debut series is receiving great praise. From magnificent sets to music, everything about the show speaks grandeur. However, one particular song ‘Tilasmi Bahein‘ starring Sonakshi Sinha held our attention. During the trailer launch of the show, the actress who portrays Fareedan shared details on how she shot the whole song.
The single, which features the mysterious Sonakshi Sinha in a previously unseen form, adds a new level of depth to the story with its thrilling jazz composition that pulses with energy and rhythm. Sonakshi disclosed that Tilasmi Bahein’s choreography was altered on set by Sanjay Leela Bhansali. They had set aside just four days for the filming of the song, and she had practised for something very different.
Having over four days for choreography, Sonakshi Sinha said, “He sat down and one by one, called the assistant directors and made them dance to the song. We assumed he was just having a good time and entertaining himself but at around 7 PM, he suddenly told me, ‘You know what, do what this guy (one of the ADs) did here and then get on to the table and do the ‘junglee dance’ which you’re good at anyway. Come this way and sit on the chair, the background dancers will press your feet and then you get up do the hook step.’ ”

“I was taken aback when he told me, ‘Nahin, nahi, yeh ek hi shot mein karna hai’ and I instantly told myself, ‘Never in my career have I shot a song in a single take and when it is happening, how can it happen in a Sanjay Leela Bhansali film? This can’t happen!’ I told him that I needed to rehearse it a couple of times before I could pull this off but he was quite confident and encouraging and believed in me, ” added Sinha.
Sonakshi Sinha described the reactions she got from everyone on the Heeramandi set following her initial performance of the song. She revealed, “I still can’t believe it and once that first take was over, the entire set broke into a standing ovation, including Sanjay sir!”
‘Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar‘ promised to be a visual classic under the creative oversight of Sanjay Leela Bhansali.
