'High' Priestesses: 5 ‘nuns’ in Mexico don the ‘habit’ of cannabis to take back control from narcos

For some they shouldn’t be in their habit, since they are in a habit of swearing by the miracles of marijuana. Puffing out plumes of smoke with each drag of marijuana, a group of women clad as nuns in Mexico, who go by the name of ‘Sisters of the Valley’, have vowed to take back control of the drug from the narcos.

The group was founded in 2014 with the vision to spread the healing qualities of cannabis. Even as they trace their roots to Central Mexico, their wealth comes from the United States. The cult sells cannabidiol tincture, along with other cannabis-based products, in America, according to the Daily Mail. They even posted a profit of $500,000 last year.

According to reports, this group in Mexico remains heavily veiled from the prying eyes of the cartels, public and the police. They operate from a dilapidated false front building, but their online presence is huge, where they use monikers and not their real identities, Daily Mail said.

“We want to take the plant back from the narcos,” Daily Mail quoted one of the sisters, who went on to add, “The Sisterhood is in a totally different context here in Mexico – because of how religious the country is and because of the plant’s ties to cartels.”

As per the report, she is a homeopathic practitioner, who prescribes cannabis to patients suffering from cancer, joint pain and insomnia.

These zealots have not taken any formal vows before donning the habit and they grow a small yield from marijuana plants potted in paint buckets.

They use old glass coffee jars to store their products.

These nuns are not just pot growers, but they are activists who go around lobbying for legalisation of the drug. They believe that the war against drugs in Mexico has been a dismal failure and a by-product of it has been extreme violence and loss of countless lives.
