The senior left-arm spinner ends up bowling a juicy full toss to Gill that the latter smacks towards the midwicket fence for a boundary, one that should help him break the shackles and bat more freely. The deficit, meanwhile, is less than 100 now for the hosts, who also go past 150.

He gets off strike with a single later in the over. FOUR! Rahul now collects a boundary off Root, sweeping the ball behind square leg. Rahul’s gone past Gill’s score and has reduced India’s deficit to 101.

Rahul decides to get on the backfoot and punch a short-of-length ball from Root through point for a brace. He gets off strike with single two balls later. Shubman Gill then opens his account on Day 2 by skying the ball down the ground. Unlike Rohit though, he escapes getting dismissed as the ball falls in no man’s land near long on. None of the fielders had any idea where the ball was in the first place.
