STUMPS ON DAY 2 — That’s it as far as the second day of the first Test at Centurion is concerned, with play getting called off shortly after the umpires signal the players to head back to their respective dressing rooms.

It was a day that belonged to senior batter Dean Elgar, who remained unconquered on 140 off 211 deliveries collecting 23 boundaries along the way, as a result of which the hosts find themselves 11 runs ahead of their opponents with five wickets still in hand. With Elgar still going strong, the Proteas can set their sights on collecting a first innings lead in the range of 100, which not only could have a major impact in this match but might ultimately decide the fate of the series.

BAD LIGHT STOPS PLAY

The umpires have decided to call the players back to the dressing room due to poor light, thanks to the gloomy skies above. Elgar receives a standing ovation from his teammates as well as from the spectators present at the SuperSport Park, remaining unbeaten on 140 off 211 deliveries, collecting 23 boundaries along the way.

Bumrah returns after the drinks interval, with the visitors hoping to prise out Jansen’s wicket before he gets a chance to settle at the crease. The Indian pace spearhead starts off a new spell with a maiden. Krishna continues from the other end. Elgar’s in a bit of trouble in the final delivery of the over after getting struck on the left hand, and needs a quick look from the physio.

Five runs collected in the last two overs, which take South Africa past the 250-mark with five wickets still in hand. Drinks called on the field at the end of the 64th over, meaning we’ll have another extended session that will go on till 10 pm IST. Meanwhile, no sign of skipper Temba Bavuma yet, even though he is now eligible to walk out to bat after spending a majority of the first innings in the dressing room.

After 62 overs,South Africa 249/5 ( Dean Elgar 136 , Marco Jansen 0)

The Indians rediscover their voices after collecting two quick wickets, with Siraj and Krishna striking in successive overs. What will continue to worry skipper Rohit however, is the presence of Elgar, who’s still going strong at the moment and is closing in on the 150-mark. Getting his wicket at the earliest will be crucial if India are to bowl South Africa out for 300 or less from here.

OUT! Maiden wicket for Prasidh Krishna on Test debut as he gets Kyle Verreyne caught-behind on 4! Squares the Proteas keeper-batter up with a short ball that climbs at an uncomfortable height close to the body. Verreyne gets a faint deflection off the glove while trying to fend the ball, and the Indians opt to review after an unsuccessful appeal. UltraEdge then confirms the deflection. SA 249/5

BOWLED! Out come the Ronaldo celebrations as Mohammed Siraj castles David Bedingham to give the debutant the marching orders on 56. We’re back after the 20-minute break, with skipper Rohit Sharma getting Jasprit Bumrah back into the attack at the start of the evening session, hoping the pace can get rid of both set batters and try and restrict the Proteas to less than 300. TEA ON DAY 2 — South Africa are firmly in the driving seat at the end of the extended second session. Dean Elgar is sitting pretty on 115 with debutant David Bedingham batting on 32 for company. The pair have added 81 for the fourth wicket so far and will look to steer the Proteas not only past the Indian total, but get a sizeable lead on the board at the end of the day. Bumrah had briefly put the hosts under pressure by dismissing de Zorzi and Keegan Petersen in successive overs, but that appears a mere blip now with South Africa collecting 145 runs in the session that is two-and-a-half hours long to make up for lost time on Day 1.

FOUR! DEAN ELGAR BRINGS UP HIS CENTURY IN STYLE! Pulls a short-of-length delivery from Shardul Thakur towards the midwicket fence to bring up the milestone for the 14th time in Test cricket, which is his first at his home ground. Leaps up in joy after going past the three-figure mark and his celebrations certainly are a lot more pumped up than usual, given he’s scoring a century in his farewell series. Also brings up the fifty partnership with Bedingham with that boundary. Thakur will also have to rebowl this one as he is found to have overstepped. SA 167/3

FOUR! Elgar brings up the 150 for the Proteas with a boundary — the first conceded by Ashwin today. Drives the loopy delivery from the senior off-spinner that’s pitched along the middle stump, placing it wide of the man at mid on. After 30 overs,South Africa 110/2 ( Dean Elgar 68 , Keegan Petersen 2)

The Indians suddenly rediscover their voices after Bumrah’s dismissal of de Zorzi. Keegan Petersen, who was among the Proteas’ top performers in their 2-1 series victory two years ago, joins Elgar at the centre. Elgar collects three at the start of the 30th over, coming back for a couple of more runs thanks to a direct hit that results in overthrows. Siraj oversteps in the following delivery. Petersen then opens his account with a brace in the third delivery, flicking the ball behind square. Meanwhile, replays show Virat Kohli changing the position of the bails at the non-striker’s end ahead of Bumrah’s ninth over, and though the pace spearhead got hit for a boundary, he did deliver the breakthrough. Stuart Broad did something similar during the Ashes earlier this summer, and this trend might just get more popular in the near future.

OUT! Bumrah with the breakthrough as India finally end the second-wicket partnership that was beginning to  frustrate them. According to the broadcasters, Temba Bavuma is likely to bat today but cannot walk out until the fall of the fifth wicket — given the amount of time he had spent away from the field during the Indian innings. He's getting plenty of massages in the dressing room right now.

FOUR! The South Africans have now collected at least one boundary in each of the last seven overs now, and now even Bumrah is able to keep the senior batter quiet at the moment. Fifty up for Dean Elgar in 79 deliveries — his 24th in Test cricket! Dashes off for a quick single after tapping the ball towards the covers. There was an element of risk in the run as the Indians had enough fielders in the cover arc, but de Zorzi manages to reach the striker’s end well in time. Fine knock from Elgar, who’s playing his farewell series and will look to make it one to remember. SA 84/1

Full from Krishna along the off stump, and Elgar goes for a neat little drive down the ground, the ball well out of mid off’s reach. 12 off Krishna’s fourth over, with de Zorzi having collected three between the two boundaries after steering the ball behind square. Krishna has been fairly expensive so far and he might just get replaced.

India vs South Africa Test Live: India will look to consolidate their first innings scores on Day 2 of the first Test against South Africa after a tough Day 1 that saw them reach 208/8 at Stumps. Only 59 overs of play was possible on Day of the Boxing Day Test at the SuperSPorts Park in Centurion and South Africa bowlers had a dream start with Nandre Burger picking two wickets as India were reduced to 24/3. Virat Kohli (38) and Shreyas Iyer (31) then forged a 68-run partnership to stabilise the innings Rabada cleaned up the latter. The next man in, KL Rahul, played a fighting knock of 70 not out to help India 200-run mark. He, however, lacked support from the other end after Kohli was dismissed by Rabada. Shardul Thakur’s 24 off 33 was the only real contribution from the lower order.

Mohammed Siraj was on 0 not out at Sumps on Day 1 and Prasidh Krishna is still to bat. The tar for South Africa on Day 1 was pacer Kagiso Rabada who skipped the white-ball assignment to rest and recover. Rabada made a comeback with a fifer on Day 1 and ended with figures of 5/44. The fast bowler dismissed Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli and Shreyas Iyer among the batters and also got rid of Ravichandran Ashwin and Shardul Thakur. His five wickets effectively neutralised India’s batting prowess.

Rahul, however, was the only Indian batter who managed to cross the 50-run mark as his reputation kept growing. He had a successful World Cup as a keeper-batter and is the wicket-keeper for the first Test as well. Rahul lost his spot in the Test side as an opener but showed that he had a lot to offer as the middle-order batter.

As far as the weather is concerned, the probability of precipitation is as high as 84%. The match starts at 10.30 AM local time and the chances of rain for start of the Day 2 is 48%. It rises to over 50% at 12 PM, 2 PM and 4 PM. We can see rain playing a major role on Day 2 with multiple interruptions expected.
