Rinku Singh Has Not Got in India’s T20 WC Squad Due to Poor IPL 2024? Sunil Gavaskar EXPLAINS
Former India opener Sunil Gavaskar, who has seen the rise of Rinku, reckons it is his average IPL 2024 form that has worked against him.
Kolkata: Once the BCCI announced the Indian squad for the T20 World Cup, the big surprise was the omission of finisher Rinku Singh. The KKR star was considered to be a certainty a couple of months back, so what has changed? In 15 T20Is, the left-hander amassed 356 runs at a staggering strike rate of 176.23 in 11 outings. Former India opener Sunil Gavaskar, who has seen the rise of Rinku, reckons it is his average IPL 2024 form that has worked against him.
In eight IPL games this season, Rinku has scored merely 123 runs at an average of 20.50.
“Maybe his form in this particular edition of the IPL hasn’t been great. He hasn’t had that many opportunities (with KKR), maybe that’s the reason why they’ve (selectors) not picked him,” Gavaskar told Sports Today.
One has to understand the position he comes in at, Rinku has not got ample opportunities to bat up the order and face maximum balls.
The ICC permits changes to the existing squad till May 25, meaning there is a possibility that Rinku can still make it back into the final 15.
India will begin their 2024 T20 World Cup campaign on June 5 against Ireland, and take on arch-rivals Pakistan in a blockbuster showdown in New York on June 9.
