Another complete performance from the Indians against Sri Lanka, carrying on from where they left off in the Asia Cup final on 17 September. It was Siraj who led the destruction back then, and it is Shami who stood out from the rest today. The only difference between the two games, however, was while that contest ended in a couple of hours with India chasing the 51-run target down in a little over six overs, the Men in Blue played out their full quota of overs today and posted a challenging 357 on the board, with Shreyas Iyer’s fiery 82 being the standout performance in that innings, one that has stamped out any remaining doubts over the No 4 position.

India now await a showdown for the ages against South Africa in Kolkata on Sunday, with the two sides having been the most clinical and consistent of all teams in the ongoing tournament so far. Though India enter that contest wtih the slight edge given they are the home side, a victory over the Proteas on Sunday certainly will be a hard-earned one. That game will also play a key role in deciding which team finishes at the top of the table, given South Africa have the superior Net Run Rate even if they suffered a shock defeat against the Netherlands along the way.
