Iran claims credit as Hamas releases 10 Thai hostages

Following a request from Thailand’s Foreign Ministry and parliamentary speaker, Iran helped free 10 Thai hostages from Gaza on Friday by giving a list of names to the Palestinian organisation Hamas, the Iranian embassy in Thailand announced on social media on Saturday.

“This request was accepted by Hamas and 10 Thai hostages were released after the ceasefire,” it said in a statement on social media.

In October, a delegation of Muslim lawmakers from Thailand visited Tehran and held meetings with high-ranking Hamas officials.

Concerning the release of Thai hostages, key officials in Cairo and Doha met Thailand’s Foreign Minister Parnpree Bahiddha-nukara.

According to the Thai government, 20 of its citizens are still detained by Hamas.

One of the biggest groups of migrant labourers in Israel, with many working in agriculture, are over 30,000 Thai nationals.
