Jasprit Bumrah rattles England with 6/19 in 1st ODI at The Oval

Ace pacer Jasprit Bumrah ran through the English batting order as he bagged his second five-wicket haul in the first ODI at the Oval.

Bumrah ran through the top order in the powerplay, as half of the England side was sent back within first 10 overs after India won the toss and opted to bowl first.

Bumrah ended with sensational figures of 6/19 in 7.2 overs, bowling three maiden overs along the way. He also became the first Indian fast bowler to scalp six wickets in England.

Bumrah’s very first over was a double-wicket maiden as he bowled Jason Roy off the fourth ball and then made Joe Root edge one to Rishabh Pant. Both the batters were sent back for a duck. Mohammed Shami and Prasidh Krishna too supported Bumrah very well.

In the very next over, Stokes inside-edged trying to defend a back-of-length delivery from Shami. The scorers have had an easy-going morning at the office as the third English batter went back for naught.

The last and only time England had three ducks at the top of the order was against Australia in Adelaide in 2018.

The opening bowlers have got the white ball to swing more than the red ball did at Edgbaston. Pant also had an excellent time behind the wickets. He made his third catch of the morning, diving to his right and plucking to a one-handed blinder in the sixth over as Jonny Bairstow poked at a length delivery and edged the ball.

Bumrah continued his riot as he bowled Liam Livingstone in the eighth over and the hosts lost another wicket for a duck. Livingstone tried to move on the offside but exposed his stumps and Bumrah’s yorker made sure to disturb them completely.

With Livingstone’s wicket, half of the English side had been sent back within the powerplay for a paltry score of 26. This was also the least runs conceded by the Men in Blue for scalping five wickets in ODIs, going past their previous best of 29 runs against Pakistan in 1997.

England’s formidable batting unit appeared timid in the face of an amazing spell from Bumrah. England ended the powerplay at 30/5. Buttler and Moeen Ali tried to stabilise the innings for a while, but Krishna took a brilliant reaction catch in his follow through to get rid of the latter.

Shami soon chipped in with two more wickets including the priced wicket of captain Buttler — who was the highest scorer for England with 30 runs.

Rohit brought back Bumrah, looking to finish the struggling England batting innings in the 22nd over. But he conceded 10 runs in that over, his most expensive, as Willey tried to counter-attack.

But Bumrah disturbed the stumps of Carse and Willey in his next two overs as he scalped his next two wickets. Boom Boom's yorkers were too much for the Three Lions' tail to handle.

Only four English batters were able to reach the two-digit score as four of the top six batters got out for a duck. England ended their innings for a humble score of 110 in 25.2 overs.

England registered their lowest total against India in ODI cricket. India will need to chase 111 runs to win the first ODI.
