Karan Johar says 'it's cool to hate him' as 'pouting at 50, wearing shiny clothes' can be 'annoying'

Filmmaker Karan Johar, who is currently attending the premier of his next action thriller Kill under Dharma Productions at Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) 2023, recently articulated his feelings about dealing with hate and criticism in the film industry.

In an interview with Film Companion, the Kuch Kuch Hota Hai director talked about the importance of a ‘stress-free and unrestricted creative process’ in making a film. Furthermore, the 51-year-old, who is basking in the success of his last release Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani, also emphasised the need of prioritising ‘quality of work’ over ‘time constraints and external pressures.’

On being annoying to people

Based on the chat, when Karan Johar was told that people love to hate him, he replied saying ‘it’s cool to hate him’. Elaborating further, he stated that everything that he does, which includes pouting at 50 to a camera, wearing shiny clothes, walking the red carpet, being catty on a chat show and laughing like a hyena, sometimes can be annoying.

He further stated “I’m everywhere. You put on TV I’m endorsing a product, judging a reality show, I’m hosting a talk show. I can be annoying to people who don’t know me as a human being. So, it’s kind of cool to hate this person because you don’t know them and you find out what the hell is going on with this person’s life and I can understand why I get the hate.”

On giving him the benefit of doubt

Johar, who has many awards resting on his shelf for his rich legacy of work, while explaining why people hate him so much, also had a message for his haters. He requested them to give him the benefit of the doubt. Karan shared, “Just know that I’m as vulnerable as you are, I’m as emotionally fragile as you are, my heart has been broken in love many a time, I’m a single parent which is a tough job, I lost my father at a young age and I work really hard still and really seek validation. So, I’m just like anyone and I hope that those people who come into my life, the ones who hate me, give me a chance because I’m not that hateful. I feel that there’s a lot of love I have to give.”

Work Front

On the work front, Karan Johar has completed 25 years in the film industry. He assisted director Aditya Chopra in the 1995 film Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge before coming up with his own movie as a director, Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, three years later. His last film Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani, starring Alia Bhatt and Ranveer Singh was a huge success at the box office.

At Toronto International Film Festival 2023, Karan Johar is attending the premier of his next, Kill alongside Oscar-winning producer Guneet Monga featuring actor Lakshya in the lead role. The film is directed by Nikhil Nagesh Bhat.
