Nearly four hours into the counting of votes for the Karnataka assembly election, the Janata Dal (Secular), which was being touted as a possible kingmaker in the event of a hung verdict, ahead of the results, now appears to have taken a big hit in its vote share and it may turn out that the regional party manages to secure fewer seats than its 2018 count.

But, these are early trends and the scenario could well turn out to be a different one once the results are declared with the JD(S) score making a turnaround. It can once again be in a position to play kingmaker if the two arch rivals—the BJP and Congress — fall short of a majority and there is a hung verdict for the Karnataka assembly.

Speaking to ANI, Pilot said, "Congress has the majority. We will have a thumping victory. The slogan of '40 per cent commission government' given by us, was accepted by the public. It was a major issue raised by us to defeat BJP. People accepted it and gave the majority to the Congress".

Notably "40 per cent commission government" was a political jibe used by Congress against the ruling BJP alleging several corruption charges under its tenure.

Congress expected to have a clear edge in Karnataka according to exit polls

The Congress Party is anticipated to have a strong lead in Karnataka, with four exit polls giving it an outright majority and some projecting a hung legislature with a party advantage.

According to a few exit polls, the BJP is leading the race to establish the government. Exit polls issued after voting in Karnataka indicated that the Janata Dal-Secular JD(S) would not regain the 37 seats it gained in 2018, but would remain a key regional factor in the state.

If Karnataka has a hung assembly, the JD-S might become the kingmaker.

According to India Today-Axis My India exit poll, Congress is poised to win a comfortable majority with 122-140 seats, BJP will get 62-80 seats, JD(S) 20-25 and others 0-3 seats.

BJP 'confident' of winning majority; Congress says will see after results

Both the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Congress have dismissed exit poll predictions of a hung assembly and claimed that they will gain a majority and form a government in the state ahead of the counting of ballots for the Karnataka Assembly elections on Saturday.

Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai expressed confidence and stated that the BJP will return to power in the state on Friday, while All India Congress Committee (AICC) President Mallikarjun Kharge stated that they will see what happens after the results on Saturday.

Counting of votes to start at 8 am

The counting of ballots to determine the Karnataka Election Result 2023 for the 224 Assembly constituencies will commence on 13 May at 8 am.

Officials from the Election Commission of India (ECI) will count votes across 36 polling stations. Karnataka Assembly Election Result 2023 is expected to be announced today, 13 May.
