Lisa Ray reflects on her profound journey of overcoming cancer, sums it up in three words

Actor Lisa Ray is a real-life warrior as she won her toughest battle against a rare type of cancer of the bone marrow. It was believed that bone marrow cancer is incurable. Despite this, the actress not only fought the battle with utmost grace but also won the same. During an interview for the ‘Sanjeevani-United Against Cancer’, which is an initiative by News18 Network and Federal Bank Hormis Memorial Foundation together with Tata Trusts as a knowledge partner, actress Lisa Ray recalled how she overcame cancer.

When asked about her biggest fear upon hearing the diagnosis, Lisa Ray replied, “Losing my life.” She also summed up her journey in three words – dear, resilience, and hope. As the conversation proceeded, she highlighted that a cancer patient should be made to feel normal and it is necessary for people to have conversations with patients that have no connection to their disease. Instead of asking how patients feel, indulging in normal conversations with them should be encouraged. She ended by reflecting on how cancer patients can contribute to society and said they should help others in terms of awareness and mental support to ensure that others are not in the same situation.

Lisa, an Indo-Canadian actor, was diagnosed with multiple myeloma in June 2009. Post three years of her recovery, she married Jason Dehni in 2012. However, it took her months to battle the disease once again. As she came out stronger, the couple was also blessed with two daughters – Sufi and Soleil, born in 2018, via surrogacy.

She was last seen in Prime Video’s original series Four More Shots Please Season 2 and Season 3. Earlier in July, the actress also questioned ‘millennial’ audience and socially aware youngsters for not raising their voices against the movie Barbie. She said, “I see young influencers who raise the alarm against social inequalities and sexism and yet are fervently celebrating a movie that not [sic] matter how subversive, brings unwelcome Barbie standards and its legacy to the next generation of girls. I can only think that marketing budgets got to them. Please enlighten.”
