Meady deal: Government employee in Kanpur sells important office files as 'scrap' to buy booze

In a government office in Kanpur, Mohan, a 45-year-old temporary worker, faced scrutiny when it was discovered that he had been “selling” important pension files he was responsible for transporting between departments to a scrap dealer for just Rs 60.

This money allowed him to buy a quarter bottle of potent homemade liquor and enjoy a peaceful night’s rest.

However, this routine was disrupted last week when he was discovered and promptly dismissed from his position. Additionally, a legal case has been initiated against him.

The issue came to light on Friday when officials conducted a search for old age pension documents but were unable to locate them. Subsequently, they discovered that records of the old age pension scheme from 2017 to 2022 were missing.

Upon questioning the staff, it was revealed that Mohan had been diligently transporting a sack full of official documents to the scrap dealer every evening. When asked about this, he claimed that it was all worthless scrap. Later, the pension records for 2023 were recovered from the scrap dealer’s shop.

The scrap dealer, Deepak Jaiswal, informed investigators that Mohan had been delivering these documents in a sack for the past three months, and he had no knowledge of their source.

Jaiswal further stated that he sold all the scrap to a wholesaler located in Beconganj. Efforts were underway to recover the remaining documents as well. In response to the situation, Chief Development Officer Sudhir Kumar took swift action and initiated legal proceedings against the accused.
