New survey says men are more likely to adopt EVs

Men are more passionate about EVs, but women care more about protecting the planet from climate change, according to an Edmunds survey.

New survey says men are more likely to adopt EVs

As more drivers in the United States swap out their gas guzzlers for electric vehicles, a recent survey is revealing a trend among gender lines when it comes to ditching the pump for the plug.

Edmunds’ 2023 EV sentiment survey explored key motivators behind shoppers looking to purchase an electric vehicle and pointed out some key indicators between gender lines.

According to their results, 71% of men would consider an EV as their next vehicle, compared to 34% of women, unsurprisingly, they also found that male buyers are making more emotionally motivated decisions when it comes to EVs.

Well over half (54%) of men surveyed said that they liked EVs, compared to 22% of women, however, 24% of women stated that they do not know enough about EVs to have an opinion, compared to just 10% of men.

The survey also revealed that men are more likely to adopt electric vehicles for the novelty of new technology. Over a third (31%) of men told Edmunds that they like being the first to have a new piece of technology, compared to just 13% of women.

Men are also more prone to be brand-loyal to a specific manufacturer, 42% of men surveyed said that they consider the vehicle brand name to be the most important aspect of an EV, compared to 22% of women.

On the flip side, the Edmunds survey found that women have a more pragmatic, smart-buyer approach to their purchases. Over 40% of women surveyed stated that they are concerned about the vehicle’s range, compared to just 28% of men. Consequentially, Edmunds also found that 24% of women surveyed were more likely to consider a hybrid or plug-in hybrid vehicle, compared to just 10% of men.

The survey also found that women are more concerned about their impact to climate change. Well over a third (33%) of women surveyed indicated their motivation in buying an EV is to fight climate change, compared to only 14% of men.

EVs are carving their own foothold in the broader market, but the results of this survey show that buyers along the gender lines are divided along more pragmatic issues with the newfound technology.
