'Oppenheimer' to 'Past Lives', Barack Obama shares list of his favourite films in 2023

Keeping up with his annual tradition, former US President Barack Obama has finally shared the list of his favourite films of this year. From Christopher Nolan’s blockbuster Oppenheimer to a few other heavyweights like Rustin, Leave the World Behind, Blackberry, Anatomy of a Fall, and Past Lives, among others, While revealing the list of his favourites from 2023, Obama also acknowledged the SAG-AFTRA strike in Hollywood, explaining how it would benefit the writers and actors and lead to better working conditions and protections.

Taking to his X handle, Barack Obama noted that the listed films reflect the hard work of the actors and writers over the last year. Further, he also included his personally backed films from Higher Ground, the production company that was founded by Obama and his wife Michelle in 2018.

“Earlier this year, writers and actors went on strike to advocate for better working conditions and protections. It led to important changes that will transform the industry for the better. Here are some films that reflect their hard work over the last year, including some like Rustin, American Symphony, and Leave the World Behind that we were proud to release through HG Media. What films did I miss?” he wrote in the caption.

Sharing the list on social media, Obama wrote, “I’m biased since these movies were produced by Higher Ground, but these are in fact three of the best films I saw this year.”

While the list included projects from his own HG Media, Rustin, Leave the World Behind, and American Symphony, Obama further listed The Holdovers, Blackberry, Oppenheimer, American Fiction, Anatomy of a Fall, Monster, Past Lives, Air, Polite Society, and A Thousand and One as his favorites.

While the list included some of the best films this year, a few other notable films, like Greta Gerwig’s Barbie and Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon, The Colour Purple, and Poor Things, among others, failed to make the cut, grabbing the attention of fans.

Many took to the comment section and shared similar views about their own favourites from the list, a section of social media users also pointed out the missing names.
