Popular Vehicles Recalled for Fire Risk -- See Whether Yours Is on the List

FCA US sees 'minimal risk' but is advising owners to park the vehicles outside until the repairs are made.

One of the popular vehicle brands is being recalled due to concern about a fire risk.

FCA US, a subsidiary of Stellantis  (STLA) - Get Free Report, said that it was recalling about 306,165 Ram HD pickups and chassis-cab trucks from the 2021 through 2023 model years.

The company wants to replace an electrical connector and advised owners to park the vehicles outside until the repairs are made.

The company said it was unaware of any related injuries or accidents. 

But FCA US said there were six reports of potentially related fires. Five occurred while the vehicles’ engines were on and one when the engine was turned off, the company said.

"Despite the minimal risk, the company advises custodians of these models not to park their vehicles indoors," FCA US said.

The recall population is limited to vehicles equipped with 6.7-liter Cummins diesel engines and prior-generation heater-grid relays, which were the focus of two previous, but smaller, actions, FCA US said.

FCA said it expects to begin notifying affected customers in March.

Until then, owners can check the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration recalls website to see whether their trucks are involved in the recall. 

Earlier Recalls

Owners can go to https://www.mopar.com/en-us/my-vehicle/recalls/search.html and key in their vehicle identification numbers to see if their trucks are part of the recall.

The recall also affects about 21,988 additional vehicles in Canada and about 12,590 vehicles in certain markets outside North America.

In October, Ram recalled 131,177 of its 2021 to 2022 Ram 2500/3500 Heavy Duty pickups and Ram 3500/4500/5500 Chassis Cab trucks equipped with the 6.7-liter Cummins turbodiesel engine, due to an electrical short in the relay that could cause them to catch on fire. 

The following month, the company recalled nearly 250,000 2020-2023 Ram 2500 and 2020-2022 Ram 3500 vehicles.

The company said a buildup of pressure and heat inside the transmission of the recalled vehicles may result in a transmission fluid leak from the dipstick tube.

The leaking transmission fluid may contact an ignition source within the engine compartment, increasing the risk of a fire. 

Separately, the Ram 1500, Stellantis’s first entry into the growing electric-pickup market, made an appearance in a Super Bowl commercial on Feb. 12.

In addition, Stellantis said on Feb. 15 that it would open a new software development hub near a manufacturing plant in Poland, staffing it with up to 300 people in the southwestern city of Gliwice, Reuters reported.
