Balasore: Section 144 has been imposed in Balasore by the district administration on Tuesday following a recent violent clash between two groups. The curfew came into effect from midnight yesterday and will continue until midnight on June 18, aiming to restore law and order situation in the town. The district administration imposed Section 144 of the CrPC following the violent clash, ANI reported. Meanwhile, internet services have also been suspended in sensitive areas.

Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi had a word with Balasore Collector Ashish Thakare on Monday, and directed him to take necessary actions to control the situation, Mint reported citing officials.

Balasore Violence: What Happened?

Tensions flared in the Bhujakhia Pir district when a group took a stand against the alleged signs of animal sacrifices on their streets, igniting a counter-response from another faction that escalated into a chaotic scene, according to police evidence. As the cloak of night fell on Monday, the shadow of unrest spread over areas in Golapokhari, Motiganj, and Cinema Chhak, sparking disputes between two communities.

As the tides of discord surged, one community turned to stones, sticks, and glass bottles to express their anger, targeting the abodes of another. The situation took a sinister turn as vehicles were set ablaze amidst the turmoil.

Balasore Violence: Attackers Invaded Villages

The attackers didn’t just focus on the major places, they also terrorized numerous small villages, pelting homes with stones and setting them on fire. It got so heated that the police had to resort to firing off blanks to bring back some semblance of order and disperse the miscreants.

Additional Police Director General Sanjay Kumar stated that police taken out a marching parade, leading to the detention of 30 perpetrators.

“Curfew has been clamped in Balasore municipality area. All commercial establishments and shops to remain closed,” Balasore SP Sagarika Nath informed.
