Fitness standards certainly have improved in cricket by leaps and bounds in recent years with fielders getting more acrobatic than ever. Pulling off catches at the edge of the ground, especially relay catches where one fielder has to throw the ball to another before touching or going over the boundary rope, used to be a rare sight as recently as the 2000s. These days, it has become fairly common.
New Zealand cricketer Troy Johnson, however, might have taken the art of relay catching to a whole new level with his stunning effort to dismiss Will Young during a Super Smash match on Saturday. Central Districts opener Young was batting on 7 when he went for a lofted drive down the ground off Michael Snedden’s bowling.
Wellington’s Johnson decided to sprint towards the sight screen from mid on and ended up grabbing a screamer while putting in a slide running in the opposite direction. The 26-year-old however, realised he was hurtling towards the boundary rope, and managed to throw the ball behind him in the nick of time, resulting in Wellington skipper Nick Kelly completing what should be one of the finest catches in living memory.

Central Districts were off to a shaky start as a result of Black Caps opener Young’s dismissal after being set 148 to win. Young’s opening partner Jack Boyle, however, led his team’s recovery with a half-century, smashing a 43-ball 57. Doug Bracewell would then finish the job with an unbeaten 30 off just 11 deliveries as the Central Districts romped to a six-wicket victory with 19 balls to spare.
