U-19 Cricket World Cup: Where are India's 2022 tournament winners now?

Another edition of the ICC U19 World Cup is set to get underway in South Africa on Friday. India are the defending champions after the Yash Dull-led side had defeated England by four wickets to clinch the country’s fifth title in the tournament. India head into the 2024 U19 World Cup with renewed hopes, and will be led by Uday Saharan, who was part of the reserve squad in the 2022 edition in West Indies.

India are placed in Group A, along with Ireland, Bangladesh and United States of America, and begin their campaign against their Asian rivals in Bloemfentein on Saturday.

As India begin their U19 World Cup defence, we now take a look at where each of the World Cup-winning Indian player are:

Yash Dhull (Captain): Yash Dhull was the captain of the title-winning Indian team in 2022. Dhull scored 229 runs from four matches in the tournament and was in demand during the IPL 2022 auction. He was snapped up by Delhi Capitals for Rs 50 lakh and went onto make his IPL debut in 2023, in a game against Mumbai Indians in Delhi. Dhull was the captain of Delhi cricket team but was relieved of his duties recently in order to focus more on his batting.

Shaik Rasheed: Shaik Rasheed was the vice-captain of the India U19 team in 2022 World Cup. Soon after he won the World Cup with India, Rasheed made his first class debut for Andhra Pradesh in a game against Services on 24 February that year. At the IPL 2023 auction, Rasheed was snapped up by Chennai Super Kings for his base price of Rs 20 lakh. Rasheed is recently in action for Andhra in the Ranji Trophy, where he recently scored a fifty against Mumbai.

Dinesh Bana: Dinesh Bana was one of the two designated wicketkeepers in the India U19 squad in the 2022 World Cup. He would go onto make his List A debut for Haryana in a Vijay Hazare Trophy match against Kerala in November 2022, but hasn’t played competitive cricket since turning up against Chhattisgarh the same month.

Raj Bawa: Raj Bawa was one of the stars of the 2022 U19 World Cup, having scored 252 runs from six matches. He would go onto make his first class debut for Chattisgarh in a Ranni Trophy game against Hyderabad, taking two wickets. Raj Bawa was in high demand at the IPL 2022 auction before being sold to Punjab Kings for Rs 2 crore. He made his IPL debut against RCB that year. Raj Bawa recently scored 90 against Goa in a Ranji Trophy match.

Aneeshwar Gautam: Aneeshwar Gautam was a bowling all-rounder in India’s U19 World Cup squad two years back. He has since turned up for Mangalore Dragons in the Maharaja T20 League last year but his career is ye to flourish in a big way.

Dhruv Jurel: Dhruv Jurel, a wicketkeeper-batter, was snapped up by Rajasthan Royals in the IPL 2022 auction for Rs 20 lakh. He made his IPL debut against PBKS last year. And positive showings in domestic cricket recently, including fifties against Kerala in the Ranji Trophy and England Lions in an unofficial Test has helped his earn his maiden India call-up, for the upcoming first two Tests against England.

Rajvardhan Hangargekar: Rajvardhan Hangargekar was snapped up by Chennai Super Kings in the IPL at the IPL 2022 auction and has gone onto play two matches so far. He was recently in action for Maharashtra against Jharkhand in the Vijay Hazare Trophy.

Vicky Ostwal: Vicky Ostwal was snapped up by Delhi Capitals in the IPL 2022 auction but is yet to make his debut in the tournament. Ostwal would however go onto make his first class debut for Maharashtra in February 2022. He is currently in action at the Ranji Trophy.

Manav Parakh: Despite playing two warm-up games, Manav Parakh did not feature in any of the games in tournament proper two years back. He hasn’t played competitive cricket since the warm-up game against Australia in January 2022.

Angkrish Raghuvanshi: Angkrish Raghuvanshi was recently in action in a Vijay Hazare Trophy match for Mumbai against Saurashtra in December and has not played competitive crocket since.

Ravi Kumar: Ravi Kumar made his T20 debut for Bengal in a Mushtaq Ali game against Sikkim in October 2022. Ravi was last in action against Vidharbha in a Mushtaq Ali game in October last year.

Garv Sangwan: Garv Sangwan played just the one match against Ireland in the 2022 U19 World Cup in Tarouba, where he picked up two wickets. He hasn’t played any cricket ever since.

Nishant Sindhu: Nishant Sindhu was snapped up by CSK for Rs 60 lakh at the IPL 2023 auction. He is yet to make his debut. Nishant was recently seen in a Ranji Trophy game against Saurashtra, having picked up six wickets including a five-fer.

Harnoor Singh: Harnoor Singh recently played Chandigarh’s Ranji Trophy game against Goa in Porvorim.

Kaushal Tambe: Kaushal Tambe made his first class debut for Maharashtra in December 2022. His latest match was a Vijay Hazare Trophy match against Kerala in December 2023.

Vasu Vats: Like Garv Sangwan, Vasu Vats has not played competitive cricket since the U19 World Cup two years back.

Aaradhya Yadav: Aaradhya Yadav played his only first-class game for Uttar Pradesh in a Ranji Trophy game against Bengal, aggregating 23 runs from two innings.

Siddarth Yadav: Siddarth Yadav, too, last played competitive cricket in India’s U19 World Cup match against Uganda in January 2022, scoring just six runs.
