Airline Takes Reservations to Fly on New Type of Airplane

An airline has begun taking reservations for flights on new electric-powered aircraft for travelers able to plan ahead.

Scandinavian Airlines, which serves Denmark, Sweden and Norway, hopes to begin offering the service in 2028.

Five years is a long time, and it's understandable if you aren’t sure what you’ll be doing then. But if you’re the type of person that likes to think ahead or stick to a five-year plan, or if you’re really environmentally conscious, then the opportunity could be for you. 

The airline just began offering reservations for its electricity-powered airplanes, which will fly in the airline's three home countries. The flights will have 30 seats and will be operated using Heart Aeropace’s ES-30 aircraft, which is under development.

As you would expect, there are plenty of details still to be unannounced, but for now tickets will cost 1,946 Swedish kronor/Norwegian kroner/Danish kroner, which is roughly the equivalent of $187, and if you book now you won’t have to pay until 30 days before your flight. 

Scandinavian Airlines has long prided itself on innovating within the airline industry. In 1957, it became the first commercial airline to fly over the North Pole, shortening the amount of time it took to travel between Copenhagen and Tokyo. The company has announced a goal of reaching net-zero emissions by 2050.

That said, Scandinavian Airlines is not the first airline to have an electric-powered flight. That was achieved by Eviation Aircraft in 2022, which carried two pilots and nine passengers for eight minutes on its maiden flight. This EV flight is not yet available to the public, but Eviation hopes to have it available by 2027.
