'Animal' actor Siddhant Karnick: Original script was more violent, watch Akshay Kumar's ad on sanitary pads for message

Siddhant Karnick, who played Ranbir Kapoor’s brother-in-law in Animal, has spoken to The Indian Express about the criticism that has come the film’s way, how the original script by Sandeep Reddy Vanga was far more violent, and how people should see Akshay Kumar’s ads on sanitary pads if they want messaging.

He first said, “To those who want to see these public message ads, come earlier in cinema halls, watch Akshay Kumar educate us on sanitary pads and watch far gory things in the ad about what smoking does to you. That is far more gory than what is shown in Animal. You are paying to be entertained. I have made peace with the fact that I can’t keep everyone happy. So those who feel that, I’d suggest please watch these ads for your moralistic reasons.”

He added, “Our job is to make you react. I don’t take the responsibility of how you react. Art is supposed to make you feel, artistes are supposed to make you feel intensely. How you feel about it is the trigger, the baggage the perception you carry as an audience. The fact that they are talking about it, my job is successful.”

On the original script

What was scripted in the showdown scene was a far more violent gesture towards my wife, who comes in between us. But when we worked it out, I was very uncomfortable with that high a violent act towards her. So, we settled down with something else during improvisation. We liked it, because this was laying down the stakes– the cigarette flick was the last straw, that the man was terrible, he deserved to be strangled. We wanted to show these elements.
