‘Back at Newlands…’: Jasprit Bumrah shares emotional post ahead of 2nd Test against South Africa

As Team India gear up to take part in the second Test against South Africa in Cape Town, ace fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah walked down memory lane to reminisce his debut in red-ball cricket. It was at the Newlands in Cape Town where Bumrah featured in his first Test match against the Proteas back in January 2018.

Bumrah penned a heartfelt note on Instagram as he awaits a nostalgic return to the very same venue. “Back at Newlands, 5 years after my Test debut here. A lot of memories, a lot of gratitude,” the right-arm pacer wrote sharing a video that encapsulated his outing with the Indian cricket team.

Jasprit Bumrah’s heartwarming post soon went viral and Team India cricketer Suryakumar Yadav made a bold prediction in comments. Surya felt that Bumrah is set to register a five-wicket haul in the Cape Town Test this time. “Panjaaaaaa hai idhar pakkaaaa, [five-for is certain here],” Surya commented.

Having made his Test debut in 2018, Bumrah has so far picked up 132 wickets from 31 matches. Thanks to his impeccable line and length, Bumrah has emerged as one of Team India’s mainstays. Bumrah was one of India’s star performers in the opening Test against the Proteas. The 30-year-old dismissed four South Africa players to emerge as India’s highest wicket-taker in the Centurion Test.

Despite Bumrah’s brilliance, Team India could not avoid defeat in the first Test. Indian batting line-up faltered while facing a lethal South Africa pace attack, comprising big names like Kagiso Rabada, Marco Jansen and Gerald Coetzee. In the first innings, the visitors folded for 245. KL Rahul was India’s pick of the batters with a fine century.

Indian batters could not do anything impressive as they were bowled out for 131 in the second innings. Virat Kohli was India’s best performer with the bat in the second innings. Kohli played a courageous knock of 76 in the second innings of the match. India, eventually, had to concede a defeat by an innings and 32 runs. The loss shattered India’s chances of securing a maiden Test series victory against South Africa in the Rainbow Nation.
