'Can't please everyone': Nitesh Tiwari's 'golden rule' for criticism over Bawaal

Celebrated filmmaker Nitesh Tiwari is known for back to back hits. From Aamir Khan starrer Dangal to Chhichhore and Tarla, the director has been associated with films that garnered much praise from the audience.

However, his film Bawaal opened to mixed reviews. The Varun Dhawan and Janhvi Kapoor starrer was released on OTT in July this year. Now, in an interview with India Today, Nitesh Tiwari has opened up about the criticisms he received over Bawaal’s plot. The director revealed how he takes feedback and that one can’t please everyone. “The golden rule we follow is we can’t please everyone,” he said.

Taking about feedback, Nitesh Tiwari noted that it is very important. “Most of the time, I write with my writer friends, but everybody is there to give feedback. I normally take feedback from people who can be blunt to me, because it is easy to say nice things,” he added.

The filmmaker went on to add that he is interested in constructive feedback. “Yes, so you may succeed sometimes and sometimes not, but that’s a part and parcel of this job,” Tiwari stated.

When asked about how it was to proceed to another film following backlash received over Bawaal, the filmmaker said, “You have to take it in the right spirit and understand the context and the place the person is coming from. If that makes sense to you, you are at peace with that person and if it doesn’t make sense to you, it shouldn’t bother you. It is that simple.”

Nitesh Tiwari has made a comeback as a writer with the Disney+ Hotstar film, Tum Se Na Ho Payega. The flick stars Paatal Lok-famed Ishwak Singh in the lead role and will premier on 29 September.

Helmed by Nitesh Tiwari, Bawaal has been written by the directed himself and others namely Piyush Gupta, Nikhil Mehrotra and Shreyas Jain. The film revolves around a school teacher who falls for a woman with epilepsy. It was bankrolled by Sajid Nadiadwala and Ashwin Iyer Tiwari.
