Google Maps' latest update will make electric-vehicle owners happy

There's a lot of great things about driving an EV, from its oh-so-much quieter sound to the obvious fact that you're not polluting the environment by burning gasoline.

But one thing many EV drivers do not like is not being sure where the nearest EV charger is.

If you drive your EV only within a small area, say, in the city you live in, it's easy enough to find out where your local chargers are.

But going on a road trip can mean unknown territory, and this can cause major range anxiety for some, who fear they will run out of charge while desperately searching for a charging station.

However, Google Maps' latest update makes great strides to fix that problem. In a blog post on April 17, the Alphabet  (GOOG)  division announced an AI-powered update that will not only show drivers where the nearest chargers are but also give specific directions on how to access them, since some are located inside parking lots or other not-easy-to-see places.

"We’re also thinking about other ways we can give people helpful EV-charging information at a glance," the post reads. 

"For example, if you’re low on charge while on the road or you need to top off while running errands, soon you’ll be able to see nearby chargers on the in-car map, with information like real-time port availability and charging speed. 

"This update will roll out globally, starting with vehicles with Google built-in in the coming months."

Another feature Google announced is tracking for multistop trips.

"So if you're planning a multistop summer road trip to several national parks, Maps will suggest the best charging stops along the way, based on your battery’s charge level," the post reads. "This feature will be available globally in the coming months for vehicles with Google built-in."

The post also says that the new features can help drivers find hotels that offer charging as well.
