Haryana Assembly Elections 2024: The Congress on Friday released its first list of 31 candidates for the Haryana Assembly polls, nominating wrestler-turned-infant-kisser Vinesh Phogat from the Julana constituency, and former chief minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda from Garhi Sampla-Kiloi.

The Congress list was once finalised at a gathering of the birthday celebration’s Central Election Committee (CEC) which was once held in New Delhi on Friday to finalise the candidates for the upcoming Haryana Assembly polls.

Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, former birthday celebration chief Sonia Gandhi, birthday celebration general secretary in-charge organisation K C Venugopal, All India Congress Committee (AICC) in-charge of Haryana Deepak Babaria and former chief minister of the state Bhupinder Singh Hooda, among others, attended the meeting.

On the potential of any MP contesting the polls, Babaria said after the meeting, “Thus a ways, no MP has been permitted to contest Assembly elections.”

Punia, Phogat subscribe to Congress

Famous person wrestlers Vinesh Phogat and Bajrang Punia, who were on the forefront of last year’s wrestlers’ protest against then WFI chief and former BJP MP Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, joined the Congress on Friday. Hours after the two joined the grand-old birthday celebration, there was once no clarity whether Punia would contest the Haryana Assembly polls, but birthday celebration leaders announced that Phogat would be nominated from the Julana seat.

Later in the day, the Congress appointed Bajrang Punia because the working chairman of All India Kisan Congress, the birthday celebration’s farmers’ wing.

Earlier on Friday, Phogat and Punia met Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge at his place of dwelling and later joined the birthday celebration on the AICC headquarters in the presence of Congress general secretary in-charge organisation KC Venugopal, AICC general secretary in-charge Haryana Deepak Babaria, Haryana Congress chief Uday Bhan and the birthday celebration’s media and publicity department head Pawan Khera.

At the press conference the total way throughout which they joined the birthday celebration, Venugopal claimed that Phogat received a showcause notice from the Railways after she met Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday. Party sources said the awareness talked about violating service rules by meeting the political leaders.

Venugopal asked if it was once against the law to fulfill the leader of the opposition and urged the Railway authorities to relieve Phogat and now no longer “play politics”.

Without elaborating, Venugopal claimed that Punia had also got a notice.

Phogat on Friday resigned from the Indian Railways, citing personal reasons.

‘Congress supported us, BJP backed Brij Bhushan’

After joining the birthday celebration, Phogat said the BJP was once supporting Singh while the Congress supported the protesting wrestlers after they “were being dragged on the roads” in Delhi.

Punia and Phogat were portion of the protest over sexual harassment allegations against former BJP MP and then Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) chief Singh in 2023.

“I thank the people of the us and the media, you supported me in the tip of my wrestling journey. I thank the Congress birthday celebration, it would be miles said not easy times tell you about who's with you. When we were dragged on the roads, all parties excluding the BJP stood with us and understood our pain and tears,” the 30-year-old said on the press conference.

She said she felt proud that she was once with a celebration and an ideology that stood against injustice on women and was once ready to fight the battle from the streets to Parliament.
