IND Vs USA, T20 World Cup 2024: Five Penalty Runs Awarded To India Against United States, Here’s Why

New York: India were awarded five penalty runs during their chase against USA in their crucial Group A fixture of the ongoing T20 World Cup 2024 on Wednesday at the Nassau County International Cricket Stadium. The incident took place at the end of the 15th over as USA were found to have taken more than a minute in between overs thrice in the game.

According to the rules, a side must not take more than a minute in between overs and bowler must be ready to deliver the first ball within the time limit. The Men in Blue were 76/3 at the end of 15th over with Suryakumar Yadav and Shivam Dube at the crease. After the penalty, India’s score read 81/3 after 16 overs.

Meanwhile, Arshdeep Singh and Suryakumar Yadav played lead roles as India defeated USA by seven wickets to enter the Super Eight of the T20 World Cup 2024 on Wednesday. Suryakumar made a well-judged unbeaten 50 off 49 balls and Shivam Dube a laboured to a 31 off 35 balls as India overhauled USA’s 110/8 in 18.2 overs. India ended up at 111/3.

Earlier, pacer Arshdeep was brilliant with the ball while taking four wickets as India restricted the USA to 110/8. Nitish Kumar (27, 23b, 2×4 1×6) batted well in the company of former New Zealand all-rounder Corey Anderson (15, 12b, 1×4, 1×6) for the USA. For India, Arshdeep (4/9) and Hardik Pandya (2/14) were the best in the park, picking up six wickets between them.

“Very very happy with the performance. In the last two games, I gave away little more runs, wasn’t happy with that. The team always shows belief in me and keep backing me, I had to deliver for them. The wicket is very inducive to fast bowlers and it’s helping us get some seam movement,” Player of the Match Arshdeep said after the game.

“The plan was simple, pitch it in the wicket and let the ball do the talking. Don’t give easy balls to score, our batsmen are also facing difficulties to score runs. The plan was to hit the hard lengths. In conditions like this, you can use the wicket more. When you are playing international cricket, you need to have some routines and the way you take care of your body counts,” he added.
