India vs England: Team India's Test record in Visakhapatnam ahead of second Test match

India were beaten by a resolute England side in the first Test match in Hyderabad. The five-match series now moves to Visakhapatnam with the second Test scheduled to start on 2 February. India will eye a much-needed win to level the Test series. The ACA-VDCA Cricket Stadium in Visakhapatnam has been a happy hunting ground for the Indian cricket team in Test cricket. India have played two Test matches at this venue so far and emerged victorious in both games.

Here we take a look at how the matches transpired in Visakhapatnam:

Virat Kohli powers India to win over England

Back in 2016, Virat Kohli stood tall and scored an outstanding 167 in the first innings of the Visakhapatnam Test against England. Kohli then followed it up with a remarkable 81 in the second innings to put India in the driver’s seat.

R Ashwin displayed terrific bowling picking five wickets in the first innings. Ashwin then claimed three more wickets in the second innings to earn a resounding win for the hosts to guide them to 1-0 lead in the series. Chasing a target of 405, England were bundled out for 158.

Rohit Sharma leads the charge against South Africa

India played South Africa in their second Test in Visakhapatnam in October 2019 and this time it was Rohit Sharma who set the stage on fire with hundreds in both the innings. It was a new role for Rohit in Tests – and he aced the opener’s position in both the innings. India piled up 502 in the first innings and South Africa responded with 431.

Rohit continued his excellence and smashed a 149-ball 127 in the second innings as India galloped along to 323 before they declared the innings. Mohammad Shami was India’s star performer with the ball in the second innings having registered a five-wicket haul as the Proteas were sent packing for 191 and India clinched the match by 203 runs.

The Indian cricket team have so far been quite successful in Test cricket in Visakhapatnam and the template is quite clear. Their batters have notched big runs and then the spinners have also delivered some remarkable performances at this venue.
