In another low-scoring affair at the MA Chidambaram Stadium, aka Chepauk, in Chennai, seamers Matheesha Pathirana (3/37) and Deepak Chahar (2/28), along with economical displays from spinners Ravindra Jadeja (1/19) and Moeen Ali (0/16) ensured CSK restricted DC to 140/8 after setting them 168 to win.
Chennai earlier had recovered from a slow start and managed to finish on 167/8 — a competitive score for this venue — thanks to useful contributions from the middle and lower-middle order including a 9-ball 20 from skipper MS Dhoni.
The victory ensured CSK remain at the second spot with 15 points and on the verge of sealing their place in the playoffs, while DC remained rooted at bottom of the table with their seventh defeat in 11 outings, tied with Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) on eight points with SRH having the better Net Run Rate.
Defending champions Gujarat Titans (GT) continue to lead the table with 16 points while five-time champions Mumbai Indians (MI) entered the playoff zone for the first time this season with a victory over Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) on Tuesday that catapulted them to the third spot with 12 points. Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) are the other team in the playoff zone, sitting at fourth with 11 points to their name.
