Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli have made a return to the T20I side for the upcoming series against Afghanistan. Both batting maestros stepped back from white-ball assignments after India’s exit in the World Cup. But now with Suryakumar Yadav and Hardik Pandya sitting out due to injuries, Rohit and Kohli are set to make a comeback to the limited-overs format ahead of the T20 World Cup.

The Indian cricket team, set to face Afghanistan in the upcoming T20I series, will be without Surya and Pandya. The Men in Blue will also not be able to avail the services of opener Ruturaj Gaikwad, who suffered a finger injury. Former Indian opener Krishnamachari Srikkanth has expressed his support for the inclusion of Rohit and Kohli in India’s squad for the T20 World Cup this year.

Speaking on his YouTube channel, Srikkanth asserted that Rohit, being the skipper, is indispensable for the T20 World Cup team. He also expressed confidence in Kohli being a certain starter.

“Virat Kohli is a certainty. He is in great form. Rohit Sharma, maybe, is confident because of how he scored in the World Cup. He will regroup and try and do well in the IPL. If Rohit Sharma says I am available, you can’t say you will drop him. At the end of the day, Rohit Sharma is also hurt that he has lost a World Cup,” Srikkanth said on his YouTube channel.

Srikkanth also said that Virat Kohli would be eager to secure a T20 World Cup victory, given his extraordinary form in the previous edition held 13 months ago.

“Virat Kohli was in extraordinary form. If they say they are available, I don’t think you can drop them. If you want to give captaincy to Hardik, you can. But you have to also look at his (Hardik’s) fitness,” Srikkanth added.

Rohit and Kohli, having been rested for the entire white-ball leg of the South Africa tour, will now make a comeback for the T20I series. Surya led India in the T20Is against South Africa. The upcoming series against Afghanistan marks Team India’s final bilateral T20I assignment before the T20 World Cup.
