India vs England Day 4 LIVE

After 29 overs, India 95/3 (KL Rahul 21, Axar Patel 17)

TEA ON DAY 4 — Joe Root bowls out the final over of the session, collecting a maiden as India head to tea needing another 136 to win with seven wickets in hand. The hosts got off to a promising start with Rohit leading the way before Hartley’s three wickets in an outstanding post-lunch spell helped the Englishmen regain control. The partnership between Rahul and Axar however, is a promising one, worth 32 so far, and has helped the Indians regain their confidence after it was dented by the debuting left-arm spinner.

We’ll be back in less than 20 minutes’ time for the final session of the day.

India vs England Day 4 LIVE

After 28 overs, India 95/3 (KL Rahul 21, Axar Patel 17)

Wrist-spinner Rehan Ahmed introduced for the first time in this innings with India needing another 150 to win with seven wickets in hand. FOUR! Slightly overpitched from Rehan and Axar drills this down the ground past mid off for his first boundary of the day! Follows it with a beautiful drive that is placed between cover and extra cover, resulting in two boundaries in three deliveries! FOUR! Make that a hat-trick of boundaries for the southpaw now as he pulls a half-tracker from the wrist spinner! The sudden flurry of boundaries should repair India’s dented confidence. Wood, meanwhile, gets the ball to tail back in in the last second while bowling to Rahul. That should make things interesting for him.

India vs England Day 4 LIVE

After 26 overs, India 81/3 (KL Rahul 19, Axar Patel 5)

FOUR! A welcome boundary for the Indians, collected after a gap of eight overs! Rahul paddles the ball towards the vacant fine leg fence. FOUR! Back-to-back fours for Rahul as he sweeps firmly through square leg! Appeal for leg-before against Rahul in the final delivery, and is turned down by the umpire. Eight off Hartley’s 10th over. Wood, meanwhile, is putting in full effort in order to challenge Axar with some short stuff. Except the ball hardly climbs despite hitting the deck at nearly 90mph, with the Hyderabad wicket losing a fair bit of the carry that it had on the opening day and not having much for the faster bowlers. Bumrah has been effective over the last two days but that was mainly due to reverse swing.

India vs England Day 4 LIVE

After 24 overs, India 73/3 (KL Rahul 11, Axar Patel 5)

Hartley returns for another burst with not much time left for tea, Stokes hoping the debutant is able to prise out another wicket before the interval. Hartley’s bowling from a different end though and it remains to be seen if he gets as much purchase from this side. Gets massive turn in the fifth delivery with the keeper having to stretch his arms to his right to a delivery that had pitched along off. Pace brought back from the other end with Mark Wood replacing Root. Concedes just a single to Rahul at the start of his new spell. Wood had been taken off after just one over at the start of the session, but will hope to make more of an impact here.

13:40 (IST)

India vs England Day 4 LIVE

After 22 overs, India 70/3 (KL Rahul 9, Axar Patel 4)

Couple of singles conceded by Leach, one each to Rahul and Axar. LBW appeal against Rahul off Root’s bowling in the following over, but the impact is well outside off. The boundaries, meanwhile, have dried up for the Indians thanks to the flurry of wickets, with India having not collected a single one for 33 balls now since Rohit’s back-to-back reverse sweeps off Leach. India can’t afford to go into a shell here and allow the Englishmen to build more pressure on them. They need to take a leaf out of Ollie Pope’s playbook and attack sooner rather than later.

13:33 (IST)

India vs England Day 4 LIVE

After 20 overs, India 65/3 (KL Rahul 7, Axar Patel 1)

Axar gets off the mark with a single off Leach in his fourth delivery. Stokes, meanwhile, brings off-spinner Root back into the attack to counter the left-handed batter. And Root nearly knocks over the off pole after Axar decides to shoulder his arms to a ball that holds its line, and narrowly misses the off stump. Challenges his outside edge again a couple of deliveries later, this time with a delivery that turns away sharply. Root starts his new spell with a maiden. Another 30 minutes left for tea, and one more wicket at this stage should make this England’s game to lose.

13:26 (IST)

India vs England Day 4 LIVE

After 18 overs, India 63/3 (KL Rahul 6, Axar Patel 0)

Bairstow’s kneeling at 2nd slip at the moment, hoping to snaffle the ball that comes at a low height off the outside edge. FOUR! Rohit continues to build pressure and decides to take on England’s attacking field with a reverse sweep behind square that is placed wide of the slip cordon. Repeats the shot in the very next delivery, and to a similar result. Rehan, standing at backward point, isn’t able to cut the ball off on either occasion. Expensive over for Leach, the left-arm spinner going for 10 in his third over after conceding just a single in his first two. Hartley bowls with a relatively spread out field to Rohit in the next over, with fielders placed at square and long leg and a lone slip. He takes Rohit by surprise with one that stays a touch lower than usual. Later appeals successfully for LBW against the Indian skipper with one that holds its line and raps Rohit on the pad bang in front of middle. Rohit goes for the review, more out of hope, and ends up burning it by getting three reds. India have now lost a third wicket in this session — all of them to one bowler in the same spell. Axar Patel walks out at No 5 with India hoping to counter the English charge with a left-right combination.

OUT! Body blow to India's hopes as Rohit Sharma gets trapped leg-before just when he was starting to look threatening for the visitors. And it's that man Hartley who once again strikes in this session, collecting his third wicket in a match-defining spell! IND 63/3

India vs England Day 4 LIVE

After 16 overs, India 53/2 (Rohit Sharma 30, KL Rahul 5)

Maiden for Leach in his second over of the day. He doesn’t appear to be having too many issues bowling at the moment, and should be able to provide some support to Hartley and Root. Hartley, meanwhile, has a silly point standing behind the popping crease, somewhat closer to the slip cordon. The visitors are maintaining pressure on the Indians with close-in fielders. FOUR! Rohit brings up the fifty for the hosts with a sweep behind square off a fuller delivery from Hartley that’s pitched around middle and leg. A welcome boundary for the Indians.

13:11 (IST)

India vs England Day 4 LIVE

Drinks taken two balls into the 16th over, after Pope cops a blow on his helmet standing at silly point. Rahul attempted to smack the short, wide delivery from Hartley, but ended up hitting the fielder instead. The physio comes out to have a look.

13:06 (IST)

India vs England Day 4 LIVE

After 14 overs, India 48/2 (Rohit Sharma 26, KL Rahul 4)

FOUR! A welcome boundary for new batter Rahul, one that should boost his confidence! Goes for an aerial cut square of the wicket off a delivery that rears up higher than usual, with Zak Crawley, standing at cover, having no idea where the ball was and it rolled all the way to the fence unhindered.

Meanwhile, someone at the stadium — probably a member of the ‘Barmy Army’ — is blaring the West Indies’ ‘Rally’ anthem on a trumpet in celebration of one of the greatest Test matches ever witnessed. In case you missed it, West Indies just pulled off a shock for the ages at Australia’s fortress of Gabba, defeating them by 8 runs in the Day-Night Test with pacer Shamar Joseph bowling his side to victory with figures of 7/68!

12:58 (IST)

India vs England Day 4 LIVE

After 12 overs, India 42/2 (Rohit Sharma 24, )

Massive over from Tom Hartley, the debutant getting rid of both Jaiswal and Gill in a space of three deliveries — both getting caught by Pope right at short-leg/silly point. The left-arm spinner did get hit for a boundary at the start of the over by Jaiswal, but he responds in style. Rohit’s looking a frustrated at the moment.

12:56 (IST)

India vs England Day 4 LIVE

OUT! What a turn of events in Hyderabad as Tom Hartley strikes twice in a space of three deliveries, this time getting rid of Shubman Gill for a two-ball duck! It's also a second catch for Pope standing close to the batter, this time at silly point! Gill was guilty of defending with hard hands, resulting in a deflection that resulted in the ball coming to Pope at a catchable height. India in deep, deep trouble now! IND 42/2

India vs England Day 4 LIVE

OUT! Debutant Hartley with the breakthrough as India lose their first wicket with a little more than 40 on the board! Jaiswal takes a couple of steps down the track, only to get a deflection off the inside half of his bat onto short leg! He'll be disappointed with what turned out to be a scratchy knock, especially when compared to the way he batted on the opening day. IND 42/1

India vs England Day 4 LIVE

After 10 overs, India 35/0 (Rohit Sharma 22, Yashasvi Jaiswal 10)

Two leg byes added to the Indian total as Jaiswal sets off after getting struck on the pad. The ball was once again pitching outside leg, taking leg-before out of contention. Another LBW shout against Rohit later in the over, once again pitching outside leg, with the shout mainly coming from keeper Foakes. 10 overs gone, and India have 32 on the board without losing a wicket. Less than 200 needed for victory now for the Indians, and the openers will be hoping to survive this session to give their side a real morale-booster.

12:38 (IST)

India vs England Day 4 LIVE

After 9 overs, India 32/0 (Rohit Sharma 22, Yashasvi Jaiswal 9)

Bit of confusion between Rohit and Jaiswal as the former sends his partner back while initially pushing for a single in the fourth ball of the over. No run-out threat in that one though, given Jaiswal had only taken a couple of steps forward. FOUR! Another full toss from Root that is punished by Rohit, who drives it well out of extra cover’s reach through the vacant mid off region.

12:36 (IST)

India vs England Day 4 LIVE

After 8 overs, India 27/0 (Rohit Sharma 18, Yashasvi Jaiswal 8)

Hartley gets one of the balls to stay low, although it’s pitched outside off and doesn’t threaten the stumps in any way. Rohit also brings his bat down in time. Another loud LBW appeal against Jaiswal two balls later after the southpaw attempted a reverse sweep. The ball was pitching outside leg, so wasn’t in contention for a leg-before in any case. Two singles from the over. Jack Leach, meanwhile, is back on the field according to reports, though it remains to be seen if he gets the ball in hand.

12:33 (IST)

India vs England Day 4 LIVE

After 7 overs, India 25/0 (Rohit Sharma 17, Yashasvi Jaiswal 7)

Root continues from round the wicket. Just a single conceded in his fourth over, with Rohit setting off for a single in the third delivery. India aren’t really taking the ‘Bazball’ route right now the way they did in their first innings. Understandable, given they’re batting fourth on a worn out surface.

12:28 (IST)

India vs England Day 4 LIVE

After 6 overs, India 24/0 (Rohit Sharma 16, Yashasvi Jaiswal 7)

England burn their first review in the sixth over after an unsuccessful LBW appeal by Hartley against Jaiswal. The ball had struck the southpaw quite low on the front pad after beating his inside edge, but the extra turn is what might have prompted the umpire to shake his head. HawkEye shows the ball to be missing leg. Later in the over, Rohit decides to bring out the sweep shot as well, guiding the ball along the ground square of the wicket for a single. Just two from the over.

12:22 (IST)

India vs England Day 4 LIVE

After 5 overs, India 22/0 (Rohit Sharma 15, Yashasvi Jaiswal 6)

FOUR! Jaiswal gets down on one knee and sweeps the ball behind square to collect his first boundary! The Indians are showing the Englishmen they can play that shot well too. Jaiswal gets off strike with a single the very next delivery.

12:21 (IST)

India vs England Day 4 LIVE

After 4 overs, India 17/0 (Rohit Sharma 15, Yashasvi Jaiswal 1)

Just the one over for Mark Wood with the new ball then, as left-arm spinner Tom Hartley is introduced in the fourth over. Hartley had been smashed for consecutive sixes in his first two deliveries in international cricket on the opening day. This time he starts off by conceding a single each to Rohit and Jaiswal, the latter getting off the mark.

12:20 (IST)

India vs England Day 4 LIVE

After 3 overs, India 15/0 (Rohit Sharma 14, Yashasvi Jaiswal 0)

FOUR! Loosener from Root, firing a rank full toss to Rohit from round the wicket, and the Indian skipper smacks this through extra cover to collect his third boundary in two overs. Rohit’s off to a rapid start with Jaiswal yet to get off the mark. Complete opposite of what happened in the first innings.

12:12 (IST)

India vs England Day 4 LIVE

After 2 overs, India 10/0 (Rohit Sharma 9, Yashasvi Jaiswal 0)

Pace from the other end as Mark Wood shares the new ball with Root. FOUR! Loud cheer at RGI Stadium as Rohit collects the first boundary of the chase, playing with soft hands and steering a length ball outside off wide of the slip cordon that allows the ball to roll away to the third man fence. FOUR! Another boundary for Rohit and this time he narrowly escapes getting dismissed as an outside edge nearly results in a low catch at second slip! Plenty happening already in the Indian chase! Meanwhile, Jack Leach is off the field, having hurt his knee while fielding in the first innings, with Dan Lawrence taking his place at the moment. Nine off Wood’s first over.

12:09 (IST)

India vs England Day 4 LIVE

After 1 over, India 1/0 (Rohit Sharma 1, Yashasvi Jaiswal 0)

Rohit Sharma collects a single in the third delivery of the first over, with Joe Root, meanwhile, is getting some extra bounce right away, taking Yashasvi Jaiswal by surprise in the final delivery of the over. Just one off it.

12:06 (IST)

India vs England Day 4 LIVE

Rohit Sharma and Yashasvi Jaiswal make their way to the centre to commence India’s chase of what is a challenging 231-run target. Big session coming up for the Indians — if they are able to survive it without losing a wicket, the momentum will almost certainly swing their way. Should make for a cracking finish to the series opener either way!

Joe Root, the pick of the English bowlers in the first innings, to bowl the first over.

And it’s lunch on Day 4 of the first Test between India and England in Hyderabad, with the hosts now having five sessions at their disposal to collect 231 runs — which will be a massive challenge even if they are the home team, given it’s they will be batting on a surface that has worn down quite a bit with a few of the delivery staying a lower than expected.

Hartley then collects three off Ashwin in the following over after driving the ball through cover, with Siraj saving a run after running from sweeper point.
