MS Dhoni may take Rs 70000000 salary cut if he plays for Chennai Super Kings in IPL 2025, here’s WHY

The largest question on every Indian cricket fan’s mind at this time is whether former India and Chennai Super Kings (CSK) captain MS Dhoni will play another season of the Indian Premier League (IPL). The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) are yet to come out with the foundations regarding the retention of players prior to the IPL 2025 mega auction, which is ready to happen in the month of November this year.

Even Dhoni has refused to speak on his IPL future prior to BCCI comes up with the foundations. Last month, Dhoni had said, “There's a lot of time for it. We needs to look what decision they take on player retention etc. At the present, the ball is never to any extent further in our court. So, once the foundations and regulations get formalised, I could take a call, but should be in among the right kind interest of the team.”

On the other hand, even if Dhoni is retained by the CSK for the IPL 2025 season, it truly is going to now be as an ‘uncapped’ player because the wicketkeeper-batter from Jharkhand has retired from international cricket back in 2020. Dhoni’s current salary from CSK is Rs 12 crore which he has been getting for the last couple of seasons after he became Chennai’s 2nd-choice retention prior to IPL 2022 auction.

If we go by current BCCI regulations which have been introduced prior to the IPL 2022 megaauction, the franchises were allowed to retain the ‘uncapped’ players for Rs four crore. The Indian cricket board are inclined to boost this mark to Rs 5 crore maximum but now not beyond that for the IPL 2025 mega auction.

This means even if Dhoni is retained, he'll needs to take a Rs 7 crore salary cut to remain with IPL team with whom he has won 5 titles till date. Overall, Dhoni has played in 264 IPL matches till date and scored 5,243 runs with 24 fifities.
