Netflix’s Kaala Paani Review: Mona Singh, Ashutosh Gowariker lead series show mankind’s struggle for survival

Cast: Mona Singh, Vikas Kumar, Ashutosh Gowariker, Amey Wagh, Sukant Goel, Radhika Mehrotra

Created and co-directed by Sameer Saxena, Netflix’s Kaala Paani with no big star cast, has brought about the true picture of what can happen when a mysterious disease breaks out in the island. The disease ends  killing people of the island and tourists who arrive there for a vacation.

The heart wrenching story of separation keeps you glued to the screen. Kaala Paani brings out the true human characters making all of us question ourselves as to what will you do when you are stuck in a tricky situation like this. Will you save yourself, your loved ones or the unknown people that you just met? An engaging series showing the reactions of people who are pushed against the wall to make choices which they probably wouldn’t have taken had they not gone through such situations.

The makers have beautifully weaved different aspects like human greed, politics of emotions, inclusivity, man vs nature and most importantly fight for survival. The human stories of each of the characters are truly emotional. The story of the Kaala Paani evolves constantly and so does the characters with each episode. With every turn of the story, the characters are pushed to make a choice and most importantly on some occasions very harsh which they probably wouldn’t have in any other regular crisis.

A still from Kaala Paani

A mind blowing survival drama, Kaala Paani is set in 2025, which is a slightly futuristic world where mankind is still trying to find answers to a lot of things. We have all gone through the COVID situation and many of us had to deal with losses of our dear ones too. The crisis and the way people are handling the different conflicts during such situations is a learning lesson for all. Kaala Paani unfolds in such a manner that you feel that it is happening right in front of your eyes and you realise one fine day that you are down with a disease that has no cure and it just finishes you within a few days. The conflict of human and nature is beautifully depicted.

Like most series on OTT platforms, Kaala Paani is close to reality and shows the vulnerability of each of the characters. The most touching performances were delivered by Sukant Goel and Vikas Kumar.  Ashutosh Gowariker as Admiral Zibran Qadri who controls the whole situation in a tactful manner and how he changes towards the end shows the reality of human nature. Mona Singh as Dr Soudamini Singh is a short role, but I feel that the director has made an intelligent decision to keep it snacky, yet impactful.

Mona Singh in Kaala Paani

The series shows how people change with the twists and turns in their life. It is one of the best web-series so far with no unnecessary melodrama and brings out the panic in such a manner that you feel that it is happening closer to your home. The script, the story, the editing is sharp and the screenplay is engaging. The back and forth storytelling makes the series all the more engaging. Kaala Paani talks about the fear of the unknown that can hit home any time. Most importantly, when all digital platforms are showing crime or spy thrillers, Kaala Paani is a human story which is definitely a welcome change. We are waiting to see more such masterpieces on OTT.
