Nitish wants 65% reservations in Bihar

Bihar Assembly was informed Tuesday by its Chief Minister Nitish Kumar that he wishes to see more reservations made for Scheduled Tribes and Castes, Other Backward Classes, and Extremely Backward Classes.

The reservation is intended for use by educational institutions and government employees.

This does not include the 10% reservation held by the Center for people from economically disadvantaged groups.

Following the table of a comprehensive report on the caste survey that his government had commissioned, Nitish was participating in a debate.

According to him, reservations for OBCs should be increased from 50% to 65%, and reservations for SCs and STs, who collectively make up 17% of the quota, should be increased to 22%.

“After the appropriate consultations, we will take the necessary action. We intend to implement these changes during the current session, he stated, according to PTI.

“At least 65% of the 50% (reservation) should be added. 10% already belong to the upper caste (EWS). 65 plus 10 equals 75%. A quarter would be left over. 25% would now be free compared to 40% previously. In the Assembly, he stated, “My proposal is that the reservation for the backward class and extreme backward class, ST-SC, should be done at 65% instead of 50%.

According to the report, one in three families in Bihar earn less than Rs 6,000 a month, placing them in poverty.

Vijay Kumar Chaudhary, the minister of Parliamentary affairs, presented the report to the assembly. Notably, on October 2, the caste survey’s preliminary results were made public. It states that there are 2.97 crore families in the state, and that 34.13 percent of them—more than 94 lakhs—are impoverished.

According to the report, more than 50 lakh Biharis have left the state in pursuit of employment or educational opportunities.

About 46 lakh people make their living in other states, and 2.17 lakh have emigrated overseas. There are 5.52 lakhs people studying in other states, and 27,000 people studying abroad.\
