Recreational use of 'laughing gas' can land you in jail in Britain

A ban on the recreational utilisation and ownership of nitrous oxide, also known as ‘laughing gas,’ is set to take effect in the United Kingdom on Wednesday.

Those found involved in the production, distribution, or sale of this substance may be subjected to long prison sentences.

Britain’s policing minister Chris Philp said, according to Reuters, “For too long the use of this drug in public spaces has contributed to anti-social behaviour which is a blight on communities. We will not accept it.”

This substance, which induces feelings of euphoria, relaxation, and a disconnection from reality, has gained popularity, especially among young individuals.

The UK government claims that it encourages disruptive behavior and presents health risks.

The new ban establishes potential fines or imprisonment for up to two years for those who consistently misuse laughing gas.

Additionally, the maximum prison sentence for those involved in drug dealing has been doubled to 14 years.

According to data from the UK health ministry, nitrous oxide or the ‘laughing gas’ ranks as the third most commonly used drug among individuals aged 16 to 24.

Prolonged and heavy usage can lead to conditions like anemia, and in severe cases, nerve damage or paralysis.

In September, the interior minister, Suella Braverman, expressed the public’s frustration with drug use in public spaces, citing the littering of discarded gas canisters throughout Britain’s streets.
