Sam Bahadur movie review: Vicky Kaushal aptly emulates Field Marshal Sam Manekshaw to showcase his awe-inspiring journey

Cast: Vicky Kaushal, Sanya Malhotra, Fatima Sana Shaikh, Mohd Zeeshan Ayyub, Neeraj Kabi, Govind Namdev

Director: Meghna Gulzar

After directing path-breaking films like Talvar, Raazi and Chhapaak, director Meghna Gulzar is ready to showcase the inspiring journey of India’s Field marshal Sam Hormusji Framji Jamshedji Manekshaw aka Sam Manekshaw with her upcoming biographical war drama Sam Bahadur. While the promos and songs have garnered positive responses from fans, does it fulfil or surpass the expectations of the cinegoers? Let’s find out…

Honestly, one can’t specify the plot of Sam Bahadur as it traces the life of the legendary army personality Sam Manekshaw, who dedicated his 40 years to the country by participating in five wars and commanding most of them. The film showcases his courage, wittiness, and greatest achievements and contributions from World War 2 to the Indo-Pakistani War of 1971.

While the filmmaker has perfectly captured the essence of the 1930s to 1970s era along with the war sequences, the narrative failed to find a connect as it looked scattered with the slow-paced progress of the story. Honestly, the uniformity of the storytelling turned out to be a major concern as there were no high points or wow moments in the film (which you do expect when you are making a movie on a great soldier).

In fact, I was expecting there would be a bang-on climax when Manekshaw became the Field marshal of India but it was clearly missing.

Talking about the performances, it is the class acts of the ensemble which make Sam Bahadur a decent watch. Vicky Kaushal lives Sam Manekshaw and you can see that in each and every frame of the film. Right from his walk to the smallest gestures, the talented star moulded himself into the character in the smoothest way possible. His effortless act will be remembered for a long time. Sanya Malhotra as Manekshaw’s wife Siloo is superb. She shines in emotional scenes with her innocence and expressive eyes. Fatima Sana Shaikh as Prime Minister Indira Gandhi is in fine form. Her camaraderie with Vicky is a treat to watch. Mohd Zeeshan Ayyub as Pakistani military officer and third President of the country Yahya Khan is flawless.

While Sam Bahadur is not the best work of Meghna Gulzar, Vicky Kaushal’s impeccable act makes it a decent watch.

Rating: 3 (out of 5 stars)

Sam Bahadur will release on 1st December
